The band is officially back together. Hot on the heels of the Persona Super Live 2019 concert, Atlus chose to reveal yet another trailer for Persona 5 Royal with a bunch of surprises that fans weren’t expecting, including a new Phantom Thief, updated attack animations, new areas to explore, and more. It looks like the title is going to be released in Japan in Q4 this year, and then at a later date in 2020 for the rest of the world.

Persona 5 Royal was first officially announced last month after being teased back in 2018 when hints of it made their way onto an official website for a game then referred to as “Persona 5 R”. Atlus then released its first trailer for Royal which led to some speculation that the character being introduced would be a potential antagonist of the Phantom Thieves. However, the opposite has now apparently been confirmed as true.

GameSpot has reported on the newest Japanese trailer for Persona 5 Royal which has been signposted by Atlus as having a release date of 31 October 2019 in Japan, and a worldwide release in 2020. This PlayStation-exclusive is looking more and more like a re-release of the original with additional content as opposed to a spin-off title. The trailer features remixed classic hits from the original game, new locations to explore with the Phantom Thieves, new attack animations, a human version of Morgana, and potentially the most important thing: the new Phantom Thief, Yoshizawa Kasumi.

There’s definitely a lot to unpack in the new trailer for Persona 5 Royal, and Kasumi is the tip of the iceberg. She’s only got a comparatively small amount of screentime in the footage but it’ll be interesting to delve deeper into her character; her disparaging comments about the Phantom Thieves in the announcement trailer should hint at some pretty interesting motivations.

There’s been quite a bit of activity on the Persona front lately, including the release of the Joker in Smash Ultimate, a possibility of Persona 5 coming to the Switch, and also that Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth is en route. This year is shaping up to be a big one for the franchise, and there’s no doubt that Atlus will be capitalizing on every chance to drip-feed teasers about Persona 5 Royal to fans along the way.
