Pixar The 5 Best (And 5 Worst) Villains

The studio Pixar has a lot going for it. While not every animation to come out of the studio has been a hit, many of them have featured lush visuals, engaging stories, and relatable characters. While many of these individuals have been protagonists, lots of Pixar’s best characters have been villains. We’re here to look at the latter of these now, alongside the handful of bad guys that weren’t as strongly developed.

Before we get started, it’s important to note that we will be focusing on primary and secondary antagonists. As much as we love the smaller villains, they can’t be held to the same standard as the big guys due to their lessened roles.

With that said, it’s time to turn toward Pixar’s dark side; Here are the studio’s five best (and five worst) antagonists.

10 Worst: Thunderclap

Pixar The 5 Best (And 5 Worst) Villains

The Good Dinosaur suffered from many problems; Thunderclap was one of them.

This pterodactyl isn’t fleshed-out at all and is simply on the search for food as part of nature. While not every villain needs complex motivations and not every story needs a massive antagonist, Thunderclap doesn’t have much of anything going for him. Though he’s kind of unsettling (like when he eats a cute fox whole), he’s, more importantly, unmemorable and has no place among the Pixar greats.

9 Best: Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear

Pixar The 5 Best (And 5 Worst) Villains

The Toy Story franchise introduced many villains throughout its run. While Sid, Zurg, and all the other bad guys are unforgettable, Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear is perhaps the most iconic.

Lotso presents a charming, warm front as the leader of Sunnyside Daycare. Still bitter about being left behind by his former owner, however, Lotso becomes obsessed with control and imprisons Woody and friends as a result. Lotso’s nihilistic tendencies become more evident as Toy Story 3 progresses. He ultimately attempts to melt all of Andy’s toys at the expense of any morals he once had. This slow unraveling of Lotso’s personality was well-executed and sickening in all the right ways.

8 Worst: Chick Hicks

Pixar The 5 Best (And 5 Worst) Villains

Though the Cars franchise has its charm, its definitely not Pixar’s best. While the first film had a lot more going for itself than the second, its villain was not one of its strengths. Chick Hicks is Lightning McQueen’s biggest rival. Though he’s arrogant, sarcastic, and passionate about winning, he’s not that original.

Hicks has a sour personality, but all he wants — like all the other racers including Lightning himself — is to win. He’s not truly evil, rather, he’s more of a jerk.

7 Best: Syndrome

Pixar The 5 Best (And 5 Worst) Villains

Though The Incredibles is filled with many smaller antagonists including Mirage and the Bomb Voyage, none of these can compare to the star of the show: Syndrome.

When we first meet Syndrome, he’s parading around as Mr. Incredibles’ biggest fan, IncrediBoy. However, after Mr. Incredible refuses to take on IncrediBoy as his sidekick, the betrayed child grows up with the goal of bringing his former hero down. In addition to having a highly developed backstory, Syndrome has a snappy personality and memorable one-liners that have turned him into a stand-out.

6 Worst: Professor Z (Cars 2)

Pixar The 5 Best (And 5 Worst) Villains

Yup, we’ve returned to the Cars series. If there’s one less-fleshed out villain than Chick Hicks, it’s Professor Z. This Cars 2 villain is a brilliant, mad German scientist who hopes to sabotage the World Grand Prix that Lightning McQueen is competing in.

For most of the film, you believe that Professor Z is the main antagonist, however, it is later revealed that he is the henchman of supposed renewable energy proponent Sir Miles Axlerod. In addition to turning out half as powerful as he at first appears, Professor Z’s motivation is never revealed. He’s uncomplicated and bad because he wants to be; A little extra development wouldn’t have saved Cars 2, but it would have helped.

5 Best: Charles Muntz

Pixar The 5 Best (And 5 Worst) Villains

Like Syndrome, Up’s primary antagonist has a complicated past that helps strengthen his villainous motivations. When Carl Fredrickson is young, Muntz is his idol. He hopes to follow in his footsteps and become an adventurer just like him, continuing with this dream even at an old age. However, after finally meeting his hero, Fredrickson realizes that Muntz is so stuck on completing his mission to track down a legendary bird that he is willing to do whatever it takes to succeed, even if it’s wrong.

This progression of Muntz’s character is well-executed. Combine that with his brilliant mind and big goals, and this revenge-driven explorer has a lot to be interested in.

4 Worst: Darla

Pixar The 5 Best (And 5 Worst) Villains

Over the course of Finding Nemo, Marlin and Dory run into all sorts of obstacles including stinging jellyfish, fish-hungry sharks, and a massive whale. However, the biggest “villain” of the franchise is none other than the quirky 8-year-old niece of dentist Phil Sherman.

Darla is known to kill all the fish her uncle gives her, thus causing the creatures in the tank to become terrified of her. Nemo is terrified because he’s next in line to become her gift. Though Darla is a funny character, she’s not exactly the first one that comes to mind when thinking of Pixar’s greatest bad guys. She doesn’t have an interesting backstory, huge secrets, or complicated motivations; She’s just a girl.

3 Best: Henry J. Waternoose

Pixar The 5 Best (And 5 Worst) Villains

Though Randall might be considered Mike and Sulley’s arch-nemesis in Monsters Inc., their boss Mr. Waternoose is the true villain of the film. In addition to being totally terrifying (he is a monster, after all) Mr. Waternoose has a complicated agenda.

As the chairman and inheriter of the Monsters, Inc. factory, Mr. Waternoose hopes to run the business just as well as his father and grandfather had. He acts as Sulley’s mentor and friend, finding promise in the rising scarer amid the energy crisis. However, Mr. Warternoose’s greed starts to grow out of control and has no problem turning on Sulley after believing the scarer will tear down the company and legacy he’s worked so hard to advance.

2 Worst: Evelyn Deavor

Pixar The 5 Best (And 5 Worst) Villains

While The Incredibles franchise has one of the best villains in Pixar history, it also has one of the worst. Evelyn, who is introduced in Incredibles 2, is the business partner and sister of Winston. Though Evelyn appears to support her brother’s plans to get supers back in the spotlight, she’s actually hoping to make them illegal forever, believing they are responsible for her parents’ deaths.

Evelyn’s true motivations are not revealed until late in the film. For most of it, she pretends to help Elastigirl track down the evil Screenslaver, who is actually her puppet. The problem with Evelyn is that it’s not a huge surprise when she reveals herself to be the Screenslaver; It’s obvious. Additionally, the Screenslaver and Evelyn seem to have different motivations, but this doesn’t make a lot of sense. Why does the Screenslaver talk about humanities’ over-attachment to curated content when Evelyn couldn’t care less? This divide is unexplained.

1 Best: Ernesto De La Cruz

Pixar The 5 Best (And 5 Worst) Villains

Yes, Pixar uses the good-guy-becomes-bad-guy formula a lot, but that doesn’t make it bad. While the studio hasn’t always pulled off the surprise villain (as in Evelyn’s case), many times it has. Coco’s Ernest de la Cruz is another evil character that does well in this formula.

Ernesto de la Cruz is Miguel’s hero, and after learning that he might be related to him, Miguel adores him even more. However, it is eventually revealed that de la Cruz stole songs from his childhood friend Héctor to use as his own in order to promote his career and steal fame. He even went so far as to poison his best bud, cementing himself not just as an envious musician but a truly evil individual. Like Lotso, de la Cruz’s true colors slowly reveal themselves in an intriguing fashion.
