Poe Damerons Mother Makes Her Daring Escape From The Empire

Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars #21

In an upcoming Star Wars comic, the mom of sequel hero Poe Dameron is attempting to escape the clutches of the Empire. Since Poe’s debut in The Force Awakens, new canon stories have expanded his linage, telling the surprising adventures of his rebel parents.

Although mainstream audiences might have been unaware from watching the Star Wars saga, the X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron comes from a family of freedom fighters. His mom Shara Bey and father Kes Dameron were once members of the Rebel Alliance, leading missions to take down Imperial forces. As Shara served the cause as a pilot, Kes was a sergeant. While components of their backstories remain a mystery, the new expanded universe is developing the Dameron family tree. The tales of Poe’s parents continue in Star Wars #21, written by Charles Soule with art by Ramon Rosanas and Marco Castiello.

Revealed on StarWars.com, the upcoming issue will follow an ace pilot for the Rebellion, Shara Bey who is stranded on a Star Destroyer. Known as the “Tarkin’s Will,” the ship is a massive wasteland of deceased stormtroopers. Even with Commander Zahra still aboard, Shara manages to evade capture. However, it’s only a matter of time until someone in the Empire recognizes something is wrong. The issue’s cover illustrated by Rosanas has been released. Star Wars #21 will kick off the new year of Star Wars comics, releasing in January 2022.

STRANDED ON A STAR DESTROYER!

After a mission gone wrong, ace Rebel pilot SHARA BEY (POE DAMERON’S mother) was left for dead aboard the TARKIN’S WILL, a huge Star Destroyer.

Shara survived and has been hiding deep inside the massive ship ever since, evading COMMANDER ZAHRA’S notice.

But her time is up. Can she live long enough to escape?

The cover is a likely an homage to A New Hope as the stormtrooper depicted is assumably Shara in disguise. Standing above deceased Imperial soldiers and a fallen security droid, it would be easy for her to steal armor, conceal her identity, and have a weapon at her side. The setting resembles a trash compactor, but it could be any area of the ship that experienced some critical damage. Wielding a flashlight, the stormtrooper looks around for signs of life or a way out. Desperate to survive the compromised circumstance, Shara is waiting on her rebel friends to rescue her. However, since she’s a pilot, she might be able to recover a TIE Fighter and escape herself, much like her son eventually does in The Force Awakens.

The adventures of Poe’s parents might not be the most crucial plot points in the saga, but they likely gave him an idea for a career as an X-Wing pilot. According to The Rise of Skywalker, there were some slip-ups along the way involving spice, but eventually his parents’ legacy likely influenced his decision to fight for the Resistance. With Star Wars #21 designating its story to focus exclusively on Shara, there is likely more to come regarding Poe’s family history.
