Pokémon: 10 Modern Updates Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Need
The recently announced Sinnoh remakes, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, look like faithful adaptions. Here’s what fans want them to update.

The recently announced Sinnoh remakes, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, look like faithful adaptations of the original games. Too faithful, perhaps. Indeed, the announcement trailer made sure to state, several times, that the essence and scale of the original games have been carefully preserved. While this sense of nostalgia is certainly appreciated, it’s also questionable.
Long-time fans expected something along the lines of HeartGold & SoulSilver and ORAS, remakes that also included new and updated features of their original versions. BD & SP, however, look like frame-by-frame recreations of the originals, but with 3D models. If the Sinnoh remakes want to succeed, they need to update at least some of the most controversial and lacking parts of Diamond & Pearl. Otherwise, they risk alienating both newcomers and old-timers alike.
10 Dynamax/Gigantamax
Both HG & SS and ORAS featured elements from the primary games of their respective generations. HG & SS, for example, included a side-quest to obtain either Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina, which also featured Sinnoh’s Champion, Cynthia. For their part, ORAS included Mega Evolutions.
Generation VIII’s gimmick, Dynamax and Gigantamax, should be featured in some way in BD & SP. Perhaps as a post-game activity or maybe even as a DLC down the road, but they should make at least an appearance to tie the remakes to the current generation.
9 Max Raid Battles
If Dynamax is introduced, then Max Raid Battles are certain to make an appearance. Some theorize that they can take place in the Underground (more on that later), or maybe during the post-game as a Champion-exclusive activity.
Whatever the method, Max Raids are some of Sword & Shield’s best features and they do a lot to increase the games’ playability even after ending the main storyline. They would be a nice addition, especially if they also included Cynthia or even members of the Elite Four as potential companions.
8 Mega Evolutions
Because Pókemon Sword & Shield makes it very clear that Galar is the only place where Pokémon can Dynamax and Gigantamax, they may be impossible to achieve in Sinnoh. However, a much more popular gimmick that fans would actually like to see is Mega Evolutions.
Several popular Sinnoh Pokémon, like Lucario and Garchomp, have Megas. BD & SP could even introduce new ones, including for all three starters. Megas are one of the franchise’s most inspired ideas and it’s high time they made a return to the main series games.
7 Wild Area
Love it or hate it, the Wild Area is definitely a step forward for the Pokémon franchise. It’s the first glance at an open-world game, something fans have been asking for a long time now. And even though it has a myriad of technical difficulties, it’s still a good idea that should continue to be explored in future games, both primary and remakes.
Sinnoh’s own Great Marsh should get the Wild Area treatment. Both areas roughly fulfill the same purpose and it would be a good way to highlight BD & SP’s place in Generation VIII.
6 Adjustable Camera
And speaking of Galar’s Wild Area, it’s the only place in the original Sword & Shield where the player can adjust the camera to their liking, enhancing the experience and making it more immersive. This same mechanic also carries on to the Crown Tundra and Isle of Armor DLCs.
It would be great if the remakes included this small feature instead of the traditional and well-known fixed perspective. It’s an aspect that goes a long way in making the games seem livelier, more dynamic, and complete, and should be a continuous feature going forward.
5 Updated Underground And Bases
One of Sinnoh’s exclusive features, the Underground is a vast area beneath the region. Players travel around it using the Underground Kit and participate in several activities. In a lot of ways, the Underground feels like its own separate world, where multiple players interact with each other. It’s also the place where players can build their secret base, which can be customized by using the spheres dug while in the Underground to purchase furniture.
The trailer for BD & SP seemed to show the Underground, so fans know it’ll make an appearance. With Camps introduced in Generation VIII, it would be great if some of its features also translated into Secret Bases, mainly the ability to interact and play with the entire Pokémon team.
4 In-Game Mythicals
Sinnoh has some of the most memorable Mythical Pokémon in existence. Darkrai, Shaymin, and Arceus were all event-exclusive Pokémon during the Gen IV games, either in Diamond & Pearl or in Platinum. Events are fun and a nice way to get some engagement from players, but it would be nice if these Mythicals were available as part of the game itself.
It’s terrible that most players can’t ever obtain them because they don’t live in the region where the event is taking place, or maybe because they didn’t learn about it in time. They could even be included as a bundle in a future DLC, but at least Darkrai and Shaymin should be part of the remakes. Arceus can conceivably wait until the release of its own game, Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
3 Pokémon In The Overworld
Pokémon appearing in the overworld is a small change that went a long way. It not only makes the game seem like it actually takes place in the Pokémon world but also contributes to enhancing and improving the overall gaming experience by making it more enveloping.
If the remakes do not include this aspect, it would be a huge setback for the franchise. It’s something that fans liked and a big proof that Pokémon is truly heading into the future. While the nostalgic aspect of BD & SP is appreciated, there’s no way game developers can just take away overworld Pokémon and not expect a disappointed fandom.
2 Fast And Dynamic Gameplay
Diamond & Pearl are infamous for how incredibly slow they are. Not the plot per se, but rather the game itself. Battles take forever to load, animations drag, and even the characters’ running seems slower than usual. These flaws become more jarring with a modern perspective and greatly damage the games’ replay value.
There’s simply no way that Gen IV’s slowness can carry on to BD & SP. It would be insulting, especially considering how much the franchise has evolved with the years. It’s almost certain this won’t be an issue, though, so fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief.
1 Expanded Pokédex
Another of Diamond & Pearl’s most glaring mistakes is how unimpressive their original Pokédex is. The lack of Fire-types is bad enough and a genuine gaming mistake, but the dex itself is hardly memorable. It receives a very necessary and welcomed expansion in Platinum which should be the one available in BD & SP.
It’s unlikely the National Pokédex will be included, but every Pokémon up to Generation IV should be available even if only as a post-game feature. It would be amazing if Galarian Pokémon could somehow make their way to Sinnoh but perhaps that is too much to expect.
