Almost three months after the launch of the Pokémon Sword and Shield, players will finally be able to bring some of their old ‘Mons to the Nintendo Switch. The launch of Pokémon Home allows players to transfer Pokémon from the 3DS games and Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee to the cloud where (if they’re in the Galar Pokédex) make their way into Sword and Shield. Support for Pokémon Go is expected to be added sometime this year.

The launch of Pokémon Home is also expanding Sword and Shield ever so slightly. With Home, trainers will be able to transfer 35 previously unavailable Pokémon to the new games including the other two Kanto starters (previously, Charmander was the only one in the games), region variants of Pokémon in the Galar Dex and some legendaries and mythicals. To celebrate the service’s launch, Home gives players two new Pokémon when they start: Pikachu and one of the Kanto starters.

Obtaining these Pokémon is simple, and both are available regardless of whether or not you decide to upgrade to the Premium Plan. To get Pikachu, just download and open the Switch version of Pokémon Home and the electric mouse will be waiting in the Box. This is a pretty average Level 5 Pikachu, though notably, it is Japanese, its Original Trainer is HOME, and its ID number is 200212, which are references to the app and its launch date.

For the Kanto starters, you’ll have to use the mobile version of Home. The first time you log in, you’ll be given the option to choose either Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle just like in the original games. It should be noted that the player is gifted a Charmander at the end of Sword and Shield, so players who want the catch ’em all might want to go with one of the others. These starters come with their Hidden Abilities, so they are a bit rarer than the average Kanto starter and, unlike Pikachu, they can be given a nickname.

Pokémon not currently in the Galar Dex will have to remain in Home for now, though about 200 more will be added to Sword and Shield later this year in updates that will coincide with the launch of the Expansion Pass. Until then, trainers will be able to trade Pokémon with others through a variety of new and returning methods, as well as keep track of their Pokédex progress with the help of challenges from easily the most bizarre iteration of Professor Oak.
