Dark-type Pokémon can be very useful for a player’s team. While they appear in many areas in Galar, some areas feature more Dark-types than others.

Pokémon: Sword & Shield feature 32 Dark-type Pocket Monsters, excluding those that were introduced to the games in the DLC. Many of these can be found in the wild, and they range from unevolved, fairly weak Pokémon to fully-evolved, meta-relevant creatures. Many are affected by weather conditions, but others spawn in the wild consistently, regardless of the in-game weather.
For every portion of a player’s journey in the main story of Sword & Shield’s Galar region, there are plenty of Dark-type Pokémon that can be encountered. Certain areas contain more Dark-types than others, so if players are attempting to fill their teams with this type, these areas should be prioritized.
10 Bridge Field
As an area that begins introducing more high-level Pokémon into the game, Bridge Field features unevolved Pocket Monsters, as well as some that are fully evolved. Zigzagoon and Inkay, which each evolve into powerful Pokémon, spawn in Bridge Field regardless of the weather.
Other Pokémon, however, such as the fully evolved Thievul and Liepard, rely on specific weather conditions to spawn. While the necessity of proper weather conditions can present a hassle, the variety in Dark-type Pokémon present in this area means that a player can find at least one viable Dark-type regardless of the weather.
9 Stony Wilderness
Stony Wilderness benefits from the amount of Dark-type Pokémon that can be found there, but most of them require certain weather conditions. The only Dark-type Pokémon that spawns at both a low enough level to be caught early-game and in every type of weather is Vullaby, which is exclusive to Pokémon: Shield.
With the density of Dark-type Pokémon in this area, however, there is always at least one that can be found, regardless of the weather condition. Many of these Pokémon also have strong evolutions, so they are worth waiting through different weather conditions if necessary.
8 Giant’s Mirror
This area features several Dark-type Pokémon, but each of them is limited to specific weather conditions. While the Dark-type Pokémon that spawn there are all unevolved, Pocket Monsters such as Impidimp, Pawniard, and Sneasel all evolve into powerful beings.
For those interested in shiny hunting, the variation of Impidimp’s evolution, Grimmsnarl, is one of the best shiny Pokémon in Sword & Shield, so this area is a great place to search. All Dark-type Pokémon in Giant’s Mirror also appear in Stony Wilderness, so players can search for these in either area if the weather is correct.
7 Dusty Bowl
While players of both versions of the game can find several Dark-types in Dusty Bowl, Shield players benefit more. Mandibuzz spawns in every weather condition, and Sableye spawns in Fog. Tyranitar can also be encountered as a rare overworld spawn, but it appears at level 60, meaning players have to obtain all eight gym badges before they can catch it.
Aside from these Shield exclusives, there are still several Dark-type Pokémon that can be encountered and captured. They all appear at higher levels than surrounding areas, however, so the player may have to come back to Dusty Bowl after completing more of the story.
6 Giant’s Cap
Dark-type Pokémon can be found in Giant’s Cap in every type of weather, but players can benefit the most from searching this area during Normal weather. During this condition, Zigzagoon, Linoone, Nuzleaf, Liepard, Stunky, and Scraggy can be found.
Along with this, Zigzagoon can be found during every weather condition except Snowstorm. Linoone, Zigzagoon’s evolution, can be found in many weather conditions, including Snowstorm. If a player wants to find one of these two Pokémon to evolve it into the powerful final evolution, Obstagoon, Giant’s Cap is a great area to search.
5 Hammerlocke Hills
The final section of the Wild Area before entering Hammerlocke includes several Dark-type Pokémon, all of which have also been obtainable in other sections of the Wild Area. Thievul, Impidimp, Inkay, and Sneasel each require specific weather conditions to spawn, but they are all fairly strong or become strong upon evolving.
The weakest of these is Thievul. Even so, it has access to many strong moves, including Night Slash, which is one of the most powerful Dark moves. The only weather conditions that do not cause a Dark-type to spawn are Thunderstorm and Sandstorm, so Hammerlocke Hills is reliable when it comes to finding strong Pokémon.
4 Route 7
Route 7 is fairly short, but it offers several decent Dark-type Pokémon. One of the most convenient parts of finding Pokémon on a route is that the weather stays the same, so the Pokémon spawns are always the same. Thievul, Liepard, Inkay, and Morpeko are all overworld spawns, so players do not have to rely on random encounters to find these Dark-types.
While Inkay is unevolved at the time it is caught, it can be almost immediately evolved into the powerful Malamar. This can be done by using one of the most unique evolution methods in the game.
3 Route 8
Similar to Route 7, Route 8 only features a handful of Dark-type Pokémon, but they are relatively strong. Route 8 is divided into two sections: the general Route 8 and Steamdrift Way. For both versions of the game, Pawniard and Drapion are found in the general Route 8, while Sneasel is found in Steamdrift Way.
Vullaby, the other Dark-type available in the general Route 8, is exclusive to Pokémon: Shield. While it is not incredibly strong in its evolved form, its unique typing of Dark/Flying can be useful to trainers who have spaces in their teams to fill.
2 Route 9
Route 9 features all the same Dark-type Pokémon that were present in Route 7, but they appear at slightly higher levels. The other difference between the two routes is that Route 9 is split up into three sections: the general Route 9, Circhester Bay, and Outer Spikemuth.
All four Pokémon are only obtainable on this Route through random encounters, with Inkay appearing in Circhester Bay and Thievul, Liepard, and Morpeko appearing in Outer Spikemuth. The additional levels may benefit some players who skipped them on Route 7, as they can give their teams an extra boost if they are lacking Dark-type Pokémon.
1 Lake of Outrage
As one of the final areas players can visit before making their way to Wyndon for the Champion Cup, Lake of Outrage contains some of the strongest Dark-types in the game. Most of these require eight gym badges to catch, but they are often worth the wait.
While they all need specific weather conditions to spawn, securing an Obstagoon, Pangoro, Grimmsnarl, and Bisharp can be a major benefit to a player’s team. There are plenty of powerful Dark-type Pokémon that spawn in Lake of Outrage, so players have many options to make their teams as strong as they can be.
