By bringing Dynamax Adventures into Pokémon Sword & Shield’s The Crown Tundra DLC, the series is working towards a solution for a problem that has permeated its biggest titles for decades. A routinely debated topic amongst the fanbase is that Pokémon’s main series games have fairly weak postgame content. While there have been some exceptions to this issue, fans have long felt disappointed that the major entries of the series have failed to match the early standard set by Pokémon Gold & Silver’s revisit to the Kanto region after becoming the Champion. While Pokémon Sword & Shield didn’t totally deliver in this respect, it has potentially come up with a solution.

With the introduction of the Dynamax mechanic, Pokémon Sword & Shield saw the addition of raiding to the series. Pokémon’s raids consisted of four players using one Pokémon each against one Dynamaxed Pokémon, which had a difficulty range between one and five stars. It was a very simple system and it was a really cool idea. While progressing through the game like normal, the four and five star raids presented a reasonable challenge for players and they were a fun addition to the games. But like any other Pokémon game, players could out-level the raids and trivialize them very easily.

While raiding wasn’t a perfect solution to Pokémon’s longstanding endgame void, it was a step in the right direction. Dynamax is a mechanic that wasn’t particularly popular and a large portion of the fanbase won’t mind seeing it disappear in future games, but Game Freak should try to work with the foundation they created. The concept of raiding, teaming up with other players to battle a super powered version of a Pokémon, is exactly the sort of content this series could use as a long term solution to its postgame problem. With less of an emphasis on the competitive side of things than something like Pokémon Emerald’s Battle Frontier, raiding is something that entices all kinds of players to participate.

How Sword & Shield Dynamax Adventures Work

Dynamax Adventures, a new feature being introduced with The Crown Tundra expansion DLC later this month, are effectively introducing dungeons to Pokémon Sword & Shield. In the base game, players can go up to a Pokémon den and challenge any raid with any Pokémon they wish. Dynamax Adventures will introduce a series of consecutive raids, where each player will choose a rental Pokémon with a predetermined build, and as raid Pokémon are defeated and captured, one member of the party will be able to cycle that new Pokémon into the team’s composition. Players are ejected from the den if the party loses a battle, but if they make it all the way through, players will then get to challenge a Legendary Pokémon waiting for them at the end, like a boss battle. There will also be an option to go on an Endless Dynamax Adventure where the party will keep going until they lose a battle.

Dynamax Adventures have incredible potential as a long term solution to Pokémon’s lack of endgame content, and even restoring legendary Pokémon to the status that their title dictates. Ideally, players would have the freedom to use their own Pokémon, but rental Pokémon will prevent players from over leveling the content and maintaining the desired level of difficulty. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s a step in the right direction. If Dynamax Adventures are a success when The Crown Tundra releases, Game Freak should absolutely consider how they can be repurposed for future titles in the franchise. Pokémon Sword & Shield has been a polarizing entry in the series but if there’s one thing it’s done right, it’s setting the groundwork for a solution to the series’ lack of endgame content.
