Sony has unveiled the PlayStation Plus free games for September 2020, and the subscription service will be adding two older titles with solid pedigrees in the form of PUBG and Street Fighter 5. Sony’s PS Plus service has become a lot stronger in recent months after periods of lacklustre additions, but still lags behind – at least in terms of popularity – the Xbox Game Pass system, which is one of the biggest draws to potential new entrants in the console market.

While the impact of uneven PS Plus title deliveries has been lessened a fair amount thanks to most people’s focus on the next generation, it’s also come at a time when Sony has become significantly more consistent in offering quality games for a nominal subscription fee. PS Plus free games in August 2020 include Fall Guys, which has since exploded in popularity to become the most-downloaded PS Plus title ever, echoing the trajectory of Rocket League when it was a PS Plus free title as well. PS Plus also included Shadow of the Colossus, Call of Duty: World War II, Star Wars Battlefront 2, and Uncharted 4 over the course of 2020, which has helped improve its reputation.

The latest batch of PS Plus free games for September 2020 continues the trend of largely sticking with safe, known IPs, as subscribers will be able to download both PUBG and Street Fighter 5 on September 1. Both games were highlighted by the official PlayStation blog announcement, and the reason it’s easy to list their accolades is because they’re both pretty old. While PUBG has only been on the PS4 for under two years, it’s been available on other platforms for far longer, including the Xbox One for a year prior to the game’s arrival on Sony’s console.

Street Fighter 5 is also pretty far into its life cycle, having originally released in early 2016. The fighting game has been consistently popular, although it’s undergone periods of time where competitive balance was questionable – nevermind the game’s netcode, which has plagued players for years, though it was finally fixed earlier in 2020. With stability and a diverse roster of stars to choose from, those looking to finally take the plunge into Street Fighter 5 will certainly be experiencing the game at its best point.

Still, it’s a strange offering from PS Plus free games for September 2020, as they’re both overly safe options that many consumers will have already owned for years at this point. With Xbox Game Pass continuing to deliver strong options even late into the Xbox One’s current-gen status, it’s surprising to see Sony offer up two multi-platform classics with plenty of pre-existing owners. For those who have missed the boat on, respectively, one of the most popular battle royale games of its generation and one of the most successful fighters of that same time period, now there’s really no excuse. For the rest of the PlayStation Plus subscriber base, however, September may as well not have any games offered at all.
