Frank Castle a.k.a. “The Punisher” should be introduced in the Hawkeye Disney+ show to remind Clint Barton of his questionable crime-fighting methods during Avengers: Endgame. After several appearances as an upright member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers, Hawkeye (Jeremy Rener) finally broke when his family got disintegrated by Thanos’ snap. Under the “Ronin” moniker, he hunted down and executed an unknown number of criminals in Japan. It was only until Black Widow (Scarlett Johannsson) recruited him back into the Avengers that he returned to his old self, only to witness his best friend sacrifice herself to get the Soul Stone and save the universe.

Hawkeye went through a similar transformation in the comics, where his Ronin persona lasted for a longer time. Yet, his brutal vigilantism is overshadowed by another prominent Marvel character: Punisher. Frank Castle has been craving for blood ever since his introduction in The Amazing Spider-Man #129, 1974. Despite the existence of various Punisher live-action adaptations that predate the MCU, Frank Castle’s definitive portrayal is widely considered to be Jon Bernthal’s in Netflix’s The Punisher.

How Spider-Man 3 Can Bring Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin to the MCU

Now that Disney is regaining the rights to the street-based Defenders, characters like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and the Punisher could officially join the MCU. While this doesn’t mean that the actors from Netflix’s shows will reprise their roles, the iconic heroes could finally participate in the wider MCU narrative and fight alongside Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. Whatever route Disney chooses, Hawkeye’s arc up until the beginning of the Hawkeye Disney+ show resonates with the Punisher’s story. Now that Clint Barton is trying to leave his Ronin days behind, Frank Castle could show up and personify his regrets.

Aside from the appeal of the Punisher’s presence in the MCU, this conflict between a troubled Avenger and an unrestrained antihero would justify why Hawkeye is still a hero after Avengers Endgame. Clint Barton has pursued a peaceful retirement for a long time, but multiple unexpected circumstances have forced him to return to the fold. If the Punisher reminds him of every offense he committed as Ronin, Hawkeye would feel morally obligated to stop him, much more so when an inexperienced protégé (Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop) urges him to confer her the Hawkeye mantle. Although it would be a risky move for the MCU, Hawkeye’s MCU journey could end with his sacrifice while fighting the Punisher, which in turn could set the Punisher toward a more heroic path.

It’s safe to say that, despite Netflix’s popular take on the famous team of vigilantes, the MCU won’t take the same approach to the Defenders. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and the Punisher will likely appear in different movies or TV shows as supporting characters before teaming up once again. Fortunately, Charlie Cox’s return as Daredevil in Spider-Man 3 would increase the chances of Jon Bernthal appearing in an MCU title. Besides the Punisher’s Hawkeye role as Clint Barton’s dark persona from Avengers: Endgame, other fitting introductions could be in Moon Knight (where he would come to blows with a similarly violent hero) or even in a Spider-Man movie, mirroring his first appearance in the comics.
