RHONY Andy Cohen Originally Didnt Want Bethenny Frankel On The Show

Andy Cohen revealed that he initially didn’t want Bethenny Frankel to be cast on The Real Housewives of New York City, and she has now explained why on her podcast. Bethenny joined the cast of the iconic Bravo series for its inaugural season in 2008. At the time, Bethenny was a struggling business owner looking for ways to get her growing business out there to the public. Along the way, she became one of the most polarizing housewives for her no-BS attitude and very strong personality.

As the series progressed, Bethenny, who was accused of planning the ‘Tom’ moment, was not only at the center of most of the drama, but she was able to expand her SkinnyGirl empire thanks to the notoriety she gained from the show. Fans were devastated when she left RHONY the first time, but she still had several spin-offs on Bravo. Bethenny then returned in 2015 for RHONY season 7 but left the show again following season 10. Despite Andy’s hesitation, Bethenny became one of the most popular housewives to come out of the franchise.

In a recent episode of Bethenny’s podcast Just B With Bethenny Frankel, the 50-year-old explained why she initially wasn’t wanted in the RHONY cast. “The reason that Bravo didn’t want me on, Andy Cohen didn’t want me on, was because I was already on a reality show,” Bethenny, who was slammed for transphobic comments, told her podcast listeners. “So, I had some slight… basically no awareness. Like, I was nobody, but to him, that was, ‘You had a preexisting profile,’ meaning they wanted it to be real.” Before Bethenny joined RHONY, she competed on the first and only season of The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, which aired in 2005. Since the reality star had a past on TV, Andy wasn’t so keen on casting her in the show. In the new Bravo tell-all book Not All Diamonds and Rosé by Dave Quinn, he also wrote about how Andy didn’t initially want Bethenny on RHONY.

Earlier this week, Dave told Us Weekly, “[Andy] wasn’t really interested in Bethenny. She had been on [The Apprentice], and it was this idea about, ‘Is it going to be a shark-jump moment to have another reality star on the show?'” Bethenny, who was accused of being fake on camera, was not only a contestant on The Apprentice, but she made it all the way to the finale. Alas, she ended up finishing the series as the runner-up, losing to winner Dawna Silvia. “They wanted it to be real people in New York that are not famous,” Bethenny continued in her podcast. The entrepreneur even said she encouraged Andy to add Lisa Rinna to the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, but he had also always said no. Now, several housewives who have joined the franchise were actresses or had preexisting profiles, similar to Bethenny.

Overall, Andy ended up making the right decision and casting Bethenny, who knew about Tom Girardi’s legal issues, on The Real Housewives of New York City season 1. The show wouldn’t have some of its most iconic moments if it wasn’t for Bethenny. She helped put the show on the map and made it the cultural phenomenon it is today.
