No teen television show is complete without romantic drama, and Riverdale has had some tension-filled, high-stakes love triangles since its first season. Almost every character, from teenaged Archie to middle-aged Hiram, has often been caught between two love interests, which makes for an entertaining watch for audiences.

Many of these romantic entanglements broke hearts, bred misery, and also created a storm of controversy, especially when it involved affairs that spanned across decades and with contentious people. Some of these love triangles created a buzz, while some fell flat and fizzled out almost as soon as they started.

10 Toni, Jughead & Betty

Toni’s entrance into the show was pretty eventful, and many fans thought that she and Jughead would give Bughead a run for their money. For instance, the time that Toni and Jug spent together at the Red & Black newspaper when he joined Southside High was fraught with romantic tension, and she seemed to be interested in him as a potential romantic paramour.

Toni also openly passed snide remarks about Betty and her appearance, which made her seem like the perfect foil to Bughead. However, after a passionate kiss, Toni told Jughead it was platonic and she liked women more, which ended this potentially explosive triangle very quickly.

9 Cheryl, Archie & Valerie

As the school jock, it was no surprise that women fawned over Archie at Riverdale High, but it didn’t make sense that everybody would be attracted to him. He had a budding relationship with Valerie, the songwriter of the band Josie & The Pussycats, and their music forged a beautiful bond between them.

However, Archie had his sights set higher on his musical dreams, which Cheryl promised she could make a reality. She offered him a spot in a prestigious music program, and new instruments, which was extremely surprising considering Cheryl’s selfish nature. This caused Valerie to get upset at being ignored by him. While the triangle caused Valerie some heartache, the other two weren’t affected and it was quickly forgotten.

8 Fred, Hermione & Hiram

Acting on years-old feelings was a trend in Riverdale, but it birthed some of the best couples. One such impulsive relationship was between Hermione and Fred, which occurred while Hiram was in prison. Hiram was a high-profile businessman with ties to criminal organizations, so it was pretty contentious that his wife decided to cheat on him while he was languishing in jail.

For the amount of chemistry that the two had, the relationship barely lasted for a season, and both Hermione and Fred quickly become platonic friends. If their forbidden relationship had continued, this love triangle would’ve had a terrible outcome for everyone involved.

7 Jughead, Veronica & Archie

The shock element of this very short-lived entanglement is what made it so notable. In season 2, Bughead and Varchie headed to the Lodge lake house for a mini-vacation, which got awkward for everybody when Veronica and Jughead found out that Archie and Betty had kissed.

While Archie and Betty had kissed under the threat of the Black Hood, their respective partners were still hurt and desired some punishment for Barchie’s transgression. The solution to “even” this out was that Veronica and Jughead should kiss in the hot tub. Their showy make-out session was done in front of Archie to make him jealous. It had the desired effect, and the foursome quickly reverted to their standard romantic pairings after this brief foray in couple swapping.

6 Reggie, Veronica & Archie

No matter how devoted Veronica was to Archie, she followed in her mother’s footsteps when her beau went to prison and hooked up with the boy she had loads of tension with – the other school jock, Reggie. Reggie had helped her set up La Bonne Nuit, Veronica’s hidden speakeasy, and the long hours together resulted in a fling.

Things got messy when Archie returned from juvenile detention, and Veronica couldn’t keep her affections for him in check. She dumped Reggie unceremoniously, which led to heartache for him and escalated competitiveness between the boys and Veronica.

5 Kevin, Moose & Midge

Easily one of the most hectic triangles on Riverdale, this one involved shootings, murders, the discovery of dead bodies, and drugs. Moose was in the closet but he had an undeniable connection with Kevin. They had their first romantic encounter in the woods, which is where they discovered Jason Blossom’s body. This necessitated both men to keep their relationship a secret to avoid becoming involved in a murder investigation.

Moose and Kevin’s illicit relationship occurred while Moose was seeing Midge, which made things complicated for Kevin. When Midge and Moose were shot by The Black Hood, it was Kevin who found them. The triangle was so strenuous that it ended with Moose leaving town.

4 Jughead, Betty & Archie

Despite having rejected Betty when she confessed her feelings for him, Archie unfairly didn’t want Jughead to date her either. He inserted himself in between their budding romance with snide remarks, hostility, and even open confrontation – he betrayed Jughead’s secret about FP being a Serpent in an attempt to sway Betty.

This triangle got worse because Alice hated that Betty was dating a Serpent. Archie eventually reconciled himself to the fact that Bughead was happening, but when the Black Hood commanded Betty to break up with Jug, she made Archie do it for her. In season 5, the revelation of Betty and Archie’s kiss destroyed their relationship, making this love triangle a vicious one.

3 FP, Alice & Hal

Alice hailed from the Southside but had built a more socially acceptable identity as a Northsider with her happy marriage, suburban home, and perfect daughters. But several dark secrets lingered beneath the surface – she had had a flourishing romance with FP when she was younger, which ended with the birth of their baby who was given away for adoption.

Alice battled her still-lingering feelings for FP while being married to Hal, who turned out to be the Black Hood. The presence of an illegitimate baby, her secret origins, and her marriage to a serial killer made this triangle an explosive one. It ended with FP and Alice cohabitating for a while before he left, which also raised eyebrows as their kids were also dating at the same time.

2 Chad, Veronica & Archie

This was a high-stakes love affair, with Veronica, a married woman, treading dangerously close to feelings territory with her former flame, while her husband longed for her to return to New York. Chad was an awful person – he blackmailed and controlled Ronnie, and possibly even deliberately crashed a helicopter to keep them together, which is what made Veronica’s reunion with Archie so dangerous.

Even after Archie and Veronica got together, Veronica couldn’t resist a last tryst with her husband, who then blackmailed her into not divorcing him by jeopardizing her finances and reputation. He would ruin her if she stayed with Archie, and his willingness to do illegal things added to the controversy in this toxic threesome.

1 Betty, Archie & Veronica

The entanglement that started it all – Betty, Archie, and Veronica is one that exists in both the show and the Archie Comics as well. Two best friends liking the same boy never ends well, and Betty and Archie’s childhood history often rears its head when Archie and Veronica are dating. Barchie had some stress-induced weak moments, followed by scripted kisses that weren’t supposed to signify true feelings, and finally, a real kiss where they acknowledged their burgeoning love for each other.

This was controversial because both of them were dating Jughead and Veronica respectively at the time, and so they kept the indiscretion a secret. The revelation of Betty and Archie’s kiss ruined both their primary relationships and made their last few moments awry, making this the most explosive and controversial love triangle in Riverdale.
