Riverdale: The Parents, Ranked By Intelligence

Riverdale’s teens make bad decisions on the regular, but what about their parents? Do their poor parenting have anything to do with intelligence?

The world portrayed in Riverdale is a hybrid of the real world and a fictional, stylized one where popular brands are parodies, the characters’ names are puns, serial killers run loose on a seemingly recurring basis, and the kids play cops and robbers, for real.

While the focus is on the students of Riverdale, led by Archie, Betty, Jughead, and Veronica, the parents are also big parts of every storyline. In fact, in some episodes, the parents and their storylines are even more interesting than the kids.

However, not all of the parents are highly educated, and even the ones who do have a decent education aren’t necessarily the brightest when it comes to parenting or other adult decisions.

10 Hal Cooper

There’s something to say for living a double life as a murderous psychopath and keeping everyone, including close family, completely oblivious to it. That said, does this make Hal intelligent? Not necessarily.

He was crafty, evil, and smart enough to get a good job to support his family and keep his inner darkness a secret. But in the end, he lost the battle and ranks as the least intelligent of all the parents.

9 Penelope Blossom

Penelope Blossom was another parent with a dark side though she didn’t hide hers as well as Hal. She was also a murderer though she was more into subtle poisonings than brutal violence. She had a good run, but she didn’t cover he tracks properly.

She had all the opportunity in the world, an impressive family legacy to her name, and all the tools necessary to run a good and honest business. Yet she chose to follow a dark path instead. For that reason, she ranks among the least intelligent.

8 FP Jones

FP was resourceful and powerful, both as leader of the Serpents and later as the police chief. But he had a rough life. He didn’t get a proper education, dropped out of school, and had a drinking problem.

He totally turned his life around, which makes him more intelligent than many people realize or will ever understand now that Skeet Ulrich is no longer on the show. FP oozes street smarts, whereas many of the other parents on the show have higher levels of traditional intelligence only because they came from wealthy families and were afforded more opportunities in life than FP was.

7 Tom Keller

Tom, the long-time police chief, had a good head on his shoulders. He was strong, fearless, and always looked out for the kids and for the well-being of Riverdale. He was well-educated and trained and did his best to raise his son Kevin.

He was smart enough to embrace Kevin with open arms when he came out to him in high school, and supported his son the way a dad should.

6 Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper is a smart and resourceful woman who was not only able to recover after discovering her husband was a serial killer but did her best to look out for her two daughters and two grandchildren. That even involved infiltrating The Farm to save her eldest daughter, even if it was a pretty unrealistic storyline.

She is also a talented journalist who knows how to get to the heart of any story and knows what to do to complete an investigation thoroughly and fairly. Sure, she did some terrible things like sending Polly away. She still has the right combination of intelligence and street smarts.

5 Fred Andrews

Sadly, while Fred is no longer part of the cast after actor Luke Perry tragically passed away, he was not only the most likeable character on the entire show, but he was also among the smartest. He ran his own construction business, raised a teenage son on his own, and always made sure Archie knew what was morally right and how to make the right decisions.

No matter what difficult situation was thrown at him, Fred tackled it with heart. He was a born leader and will be greatly missed by everyone.

4 Hiram Lodge

Hiram might not be well-liked, and it’s arguable he isn’t a good parent, either. But there’s no denying that he is intelligent and tremendously clever. He always finds a way to work around issues, hitting back against those that oppose him with strategies that take them down and put him on top.

He has built his own wealth, albeit on the back of a criminal enterprise. Nonetheless, he is a smart businessman. If only he decided to go on the straight and narrow, Hiram could potentially be just as successful doing something admirable.

3 Sierra McCoy

Long-time mayor of the town, Sierra hasn’t been seen for a while nor her daughter Josie who went off to pursue her singing career. But Sierra was a fierce businesswoman who knew how to handle tough situations with residents of Riverdale and lawmakers.

Arguably the best educated of the bunch, she never backed down from a fight and always went after what she wanted. She was Riverdale’s first woman of color who served as mayor and made her mark in the position, despite pushback from some residents.

2 Hermione Lodge

Hermione might have been a housewife for much of her life and was given positions of authority because of her husband, but she demonstrated again and again, she could handle herself without him.

She made the smartest move when she decided to leave Hiram the second she had the opportunity to do so, making sure that she could follow the path she wanted, which was to go on television. While she gets a lot of credit for social status, Hermione never got enough credit for how smart she was. Even though the character is no longer on the show, she remains one of the smartest, continuing to teach her daughter to be confident and stand up for herself.

1 Mary Andrews

A lawyer by profession ranks Mary (Molly Ringwald) heads and shoulders above the others when it comes to book smarts, given that she has the skill and education to take on any opponent. She might be more soft-spoken and kinder than the other parents, but just because she isn’t ruthless doesn’t mean she isn’t smart.

When she came back into Archie’s life, she realized he was lost and tried to find a path for him through the military to ensure he didn’t take a wrong turn after graduation. Leaving her family to pursue a career outside of Riverdale wasn’t the smartest move, but she did what was right for her knowing Archie would be in good hands with his father. As soon as her son really needed her, however, she was right there.
