RoboCop Director & Writer Reunite For New Spy Thriller Young Sinner

The directing and screenwriting duo behind the original RoboCop, Paul Verhoeven and Edward Neumeier, are reuniting for a new spy thriller titled Young Sinner. Verhoeven, who first collaborated with Neumeier on the 1987 sci-fi classic about a murdered police officer who was resurrected as a cyborg, would later come back together 10 years later on another sci-fi film, Starship Troopers. While Verhoeven would depart the Starship Troopers franchise after the first film, Neumeier continued to write and produce several sequels, even directing 2008’s Starship Troopers 3 himself.

More recently, the pair are coming back to work on their new thriller, Young Sinner, which Verhoeven suggests will draw on erotic themes used in thrillers such as Fatal Attraction and his own 1992 film Basic Instinct, which starred Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone. While speaking with MovieMaker, the pair unveiled their plans for their latest collaboration, which involves consulting with a former Intelligence officer to “keep us real about Capitol Hill and the spy business.” Check out what they had to say below:

Neumeier: Young Sinner is a political thriller set in Washington, D.C.. Our heroine, a young staffer who works for a powerful Senator, is drawn into a web of international intrigue and danger, and of course there is also a little sex.

Verhoeven: I’m really think[ing] that what Neumeier and I, at this moment, want to do with this script, Young Sinner, will be an innovative version of movies like Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct, and it would not be adding all kinds of digital elements. As little as possible.

While the thriller genre is nothing new for Verhoeven, who in addition to his work on Basic Instinct has also directed smaller, arthouse thrillers such as 2006’s Black Book and 2016’s Elle, the genre marks a departure for Neumeier, whose film credits are all largely based in science fiction. That said, the duo’s previous collaboration has certainly resulted in some truly memorable cinematic experiences, so it will be interesting to see how their latest project will turn out when it finally makes its way to the big screen. At the moment, however, it still seems to be early days for Young Sinner, though Verhoeven’s latest biographical drama Benedetta has only just hit theaters in the US.
