RoboCop Star Peter Weller Joins Dexter Season 5

Peter Weller has officially joined the cast of Dexter for an eight-episode arc in season 5 of Showtime’s sympathetic serial-killer drama.

Weller, best known for his role as Officer Alex Murphy (aka RoboCop) in the first two installments of the RoboCop film franchise, will once again be finding trouble as a boy in blue.

According to Deadline, Weller “[plays] a troubled Miami Metro police officer who gets caught up in an internal affairs investigation.”

While it may seem, to fans of RoboCop or The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, as if Weller had mostly disappeared from Hollywood, the actor has been working steadily throughout the last twenty years – appearing on everything from Star Trek: Enterprise to 24.

Most recently Weller was cast for a one-shot appearance in season 2 of Fringe as Alistair Peck, an MIT professor of astrophysics, in the episode “White Tulip.” The episode, both as a result of the story and Weller’s incredible performance, is one of the best hours of Fringe TV to date.

Not much is known about Weller’s troubled officer role in Dexter, but it seems likely that, given Weller’s age as well as the series-long “Harry” story-arc, that the character will be connected to Dexter’s father and past – as well as the terrible events that led to the birth of the Dark Passenger.

While much of the Dexter Season 5 story is still shrouded in mystery, it’s certainly becoming clear that the upcoming season will be extremely character-focused – as opposed to story-driven (which, given the aftermath of the Trinity Killer is probably a smart choice). Dexter always provides great character drama but this season, possibly more than any other, appears to have really mixed up the formula – to crack Dexter open a bit more.

In order to successfully address this new layer of Dexter, the man, Showtime has put together an impressive ensemble cast for Season 5, including Julia Stiles (The Bourne Ultimatum), Jonny Lee Miller (Eli Stone), Shawn Hatosy (Southland), Maria Doyle Kennedy (The Tudors) – as well as Weller.

Hopefully we’ll know more in a couple weeks – at Showtime’s “Dexter” and “Anti-hero” Comic-Con panels. Both events will be held on Thursday, July 22nd, in Ballroom 20.

Dexter Season 5 premiers on September 26, 2010 – only on Showtime.
