Rugrats 10 Biggest Differences Between The Reboot And The Original

As one of the original animated shows to break out from Nickelodeon, Rugrats has a massive following. In particular, fans of the original show are still attached to it because many of them grew up throughout the shows’ original run.

With the announcement of a revival of Rugrats on Paramount+, those same fans that have grown up with these animated children as well as a new generation of future fans can’t wait to see what mischief their favorite babies are going to get into. However, what has stayed the same from the original, and what has changed?

10 Adults Voice Cast

One of the biggest things that got fans excited about the Rugrats reboot was the entire voice cast of the babies coming back to their roles from the original run. The babies’ voices are iconic, so securing all of those voice actors was a boon.

The big change to the cast comes from the adults, as each of them has a brand new voice actor. The acting talent they were able to bring on for these roles is strong, but it would have been nice to see more of the older cast come back if they were available.

9 Set In Modern Time

Rugrats is absolutely a product of its time and hasn’t necessarily aged well, as it definitely has a feel of a show that originated in the early nineties. Twenty years after its premiers, fans were interested in whether the new iteration was going to stay in that period or move to the present day.

That question was answered very quickly, as the Rugrats have shown to enter this technological age. Whether it be Stu constantly playing video games, Didi streaming a vlog from her phone, or the babies having tablets to play with, technology has certainly upgraded for the Rugrats cast.

8 The Animation Style

Like most animation in the nineties, Rugrats used the standard 2D hand-drawn animation style. As animation has moved towards 3D computer-generated animation, fans were curious to see if Rugrats would move that way too.

From the first teaser poster, fans got their answer and were able to get a look at the newly animated Rugrats. The 3D art style is a big change for the show, and at times the characters can look a bit off. But the characters still look relatively similar aside from the extra dimension, so fans will get used to the new look as more episodes come out.

7 Charlotte Pickles’ Career

The original show didn’t focus too much on the careers of the parents, but Charlotte Pickles was always the exception, as she was very career-focused, always on the phone with her assistant Jonathan. As the CEO of a company, people expect a lot of her, but she always still made time for her daughter and family the best she could.

In the new show, Charlotte has seen a career change, now entering into the fray of politics as a city councilwoman. She still has Jonathan working for her, but it will be interesting to see if this version of Charlotte will have her career as such a major part of her character.

6 The Finster’s Living Nextdoor

The Pickles and Finster families are extremely close, as not only are Tommy and Chuckie best friends, but Stu and Chaz have been friends since childhood as well. So it makes sense why the two families were always together.

Tommy and Chuckie are going to be even closer in the revival, at least physically, as the two families now live next door to each other. The two were bound to be together most of the time regardless, but it could potentially lead to some new dynamics.

5 The Pickles’ House

The main location of most Rugrats episodes was the home of Stu and Didi Pickles. They weren’t the only adults in the house, as Grandpa Lou lived with them, and he would occasionally watch the “sprouts” on his own.

They are all living in the Pickles’ house in the new show, but this time around it’s actually Grandpa’s house, and Stu, Didi, and Tommy are moving in with him. The house hasn’t changed, but it could be a small alteration that affects future episodes.

4 The Adults Getting More Screen Time

With the title being Rugrats, the babies will always be the main focus of the series. However, in the original run, the parents felt less important and more like reoccurring characters that were used whenever the plot of the episode needed to move forward.

This time around, it seems like the parents are getting a bit more screen time. The plot is still focusing on the babies, but what the adults are doing in the episode is a significant part of the series as well. They are getting their own plot points, as opposed to being in the background until the babies need to go to a new setting.

3 Grandpa Lou’s Personality

Grandpa Lou is probably the adult that spends the most time with the Rugrats. He is an easy, available babysitter, as well as someone the (admittedly freakishly intelligent) babies can outsmart a bit and escape from to go on their adventures.

Grandpa’s past gets touched on regularly, as the original show let viewers know that he was a war veteran, amongst other things. The new show changed his backstory drastically, as he now seems to be a hippie, giving him a much more zen personality.

2 Phil & Lil’s Parents

The DeVille family has gone through the most drastic change out of any characters on the show. Phil and Lil are still twins, and their mother Betty still seems like the confident woman she always was.

The big change comes in the form of their father Howard, who is completely missing from the show now. The showrunners chose to make Betty a lesbian and single mother, making an appearance from Howard at some point fairly unlikely, but not out of the question.

1 Susie Being A Main Character

Susie was introduced very early into the Rugrats original run as the Pickles’ newest neighbor. She also proved to be a worthy adversary for the sassy, infinitely quotable Angelica Pickles whenever the babies need help standing up to her. Unfortunately, she would only show up sporadically, not ever joining the main cast of the babies.

This has been a welcome change in the revival, as Susie has joined the regular cast of the Rugrats. They even aged her down by a year to have her fit in with the younger babies better. Susie was always a fun character, so it’s wonderful that she’ll play an even bigger role in the reboot.
