The design director of Sackboy: A Big Adventure announced the pre-order bonuses for the upcoming PlayStation 5 launch game today, including a special edition that’s only available on PS4. The 3D platformer is a spinoff of a beloved Sony franchise, LittleBigPlanet which focuses on its recognizable mascot, Sackboy. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is one of several titles coming to Sony’s next-generation console at launch.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure, like many other PlayStation 5 titles releasing during this transition period, is offering both a PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 version. This decision has been met with mixed reactions, as it seems to contradict messages from various Sony representatives stating that the company was focusing on separating the generations. Fans are now attempting to figure out what this means for current-generation games getting upgraded to the PlayStation 5. Spider Man: Miles Morales, another PS5 launch game coming to PlayStation 4, is one of the most recent examples of this. While Miles Morales will be getting a current-gen copy that players can upgrade for free to its next-gen counterpart, its predecessor, Marvel’s Spider-Man is a little more complicated. Ned Waterhouse, design director at Sumo Digital, was a little clearer about what players can expect from Sackboy: A Big Adventure on today’s PlayStation Blog announcement. The 3D co-op title will strive to capture LittleBigPlanet’s light-hearted vibe while introducing its own mechanics, visuals, and locations. Promising a wide array of interesting new levels and an infectious soundtrack, Waterhouse also highlights some things that make the spin-off feel familiar, like the game’s over 60 costumes.

There are two pre-order editions to pick from according to the post: the Digital Deluxe Edition and the Special Edition. Both will come bundled with a special digital comic, but that is where the similarities end. Sackboy: A Big Adventure Digital Deluxe Edition is, as its name implies, a digital copy of the game that can be ordered for either the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5. It includes the artbook, soundtrack, additional costumes, unique emotes, and a variety of Sackboy avatars. Sackboy: A Big Adventure Special Edition, however, offers a physical version of the game and is exclusive to the PlayStation 4. This version comes with everything from the Digital Deluxe Edition and a delightful-looking Sackboy plush.

Though these preorder offerings are a little clearer than the situation with Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, it still is not completely straightforward. It is strange to see the Sackboy: A Big Adventure Special Edition only available on the PlayStation 4, but good to know that the game can be upgraded at no cost to the next-gen version. However, keep in mind that the Special Edition includes a physical copy of the game, so anyone looking to upgrade will need a standard PlayStation 5 – the one with a disc drive – which costs about $100 more than the digital-only version of the console.

LittleBigPlanet may not be the most popular game on PS4, but Sackboy has served as a sort of mascot for the system nonetheless. Developer Media Molecule also went on to launch the creation tool-game hybrid Dreams. The place of prominence being given to Sackboy: A Big Adventure could signal that the developer has more in store for the PS5.
