Saints Row developer Volition has responded to angry fans with a GIF that says “haters gonna hate” after receiving severe negative criticism over the newly-announced reboot. Revealed earlier this week at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2021, the trailer for the newly rebooted Saints Row saw a considerable amount of dislikes across multiple Youtube channels including Playstation, Xbox, and the official Saints Row channel. Players accused the reboot of missing what makes Saints Row special, and they took to Twitter, where the official Saints Row Twitter account began responding to multiple critical concerns.

Six years after its last title in the series and Gat’s final adventure in Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell, the series has returned with a full reboot. The action-adventure sandbox franchise has been known for its degree of open-world creativity and over-the-top exaggeration in terms of gameplay and humor. In terms of the reboot, Volition has stated that the original games left it with little to explore, and that the franchise needed a new identity. Saying goodbye to the Third Saints Gang and bringing in a new quartet of younger rising crime bosses, Volition was swiftly confronted with a bombardment of fan criticisms and angry reactions to the Saints Row reboot, ultimately leading to the developer responding online.

After being accused of letting down the fanbase, the official Saints Row Twitter account decided to jokingly reply with a “haters gonna hate” GIF. Later, the account made a more serious statement, declaring that the development team has no intention of backing down on the project. Volition conceded that “we get it, it’s new and it’s a shock reaction to a reboot like no other,” remarking that this sentiment was what fueled the GIF. Multiple other replies accused the game of having a similar art style to Fornite and questioning its overall sense of direction.

We are not backing down on this game. We get it, it’s new and it’s a shock reaction to a reboot like no other. The gif was supposed to convey that.

While many reactions to the reboot’s trailer have been negative and question the title’s overall direction, a new Saints Row reboot developer trailer has revealed more about the game’s open world and shows that it’s quite similar to Saints Row: The Third. Revealing some of the new and returning features, the trailer has promised multiple new gangs, better customization, and the return of activities to grow your crime ring in a playground of nine unique districts, on the Southwest Desert of Santo Ileso.

Despite the backlash and disappointment from a portion of the fanbase, Volition has stated its intention to see this project through to the end. Though completely removing previous characters and setting a new identity for the series rubbed some fans the wrong way, more details about the game’s setting, characters, and gameplay may yet build up to a game everyone can be excited about.
