Scarlet Witchs Powerful New Weapon Could Finally Fix Her Powers

Warning: contains a preview of X-Men: Trial of Magneto #4!

Few in the Marvel Universe are more powerful than the Scarlet Witch. On multiple occasions, she has demonstrated the power to remake reality in her image. Unfortunately, Scarlet Witch has had trouble controlling this power over the years, but in a special preview for X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #4, on sale in print and digital December 1, she may have at long last found a way to channel her connection to Chaos Magic.

Scarlet Witch has been a major force for good in the Marvel Universe, serving on both the Avengers and the X-Men. Conversely, Scarlet Witch can be a force for destruction as well, as seen in 2005’s House of M. In that miniseries, Scarlet Witch’s reality-warping powers spiraled out of control, creating a world where her father Magneto was triumphant. When that failed, she then used her Chaos Magic to depower ninety-eight percent of Earth’s mutants. The ramifications from this action continue to resonate today, making Scarlet Witch a pariah among mutants. In X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #1, she was killed on a trip to Krakoa, and now her soul does battle with what appears to be her older self, while her resurrected body (minus most of her memories) attempts to help the X-Men and Avengers fend off an attack by a trio of kaiju.

In a preview for issue four shared by Comic Book Resources, Wanda confronts her older self in a dimension she recently realized is composed of Chaos Magic. ‘Old Lady Wanda’ lashes out with a crystal staff, chiding her past self’s overwhelming guilt. Meanwhile, the resurrected Wanda attempts to help Krakoa, having just learned of her past atrocities from the X-Men in a surprisingly sadistic memory download. The Scarlet Witch’s inability to control her powers has been a theme since her introduction in 1964’s X-Men #4. Yet the older Scarlet Witch fans meet in this preview seems to have no such problem. This could be attributed to age and experience, but the staff the older Scarlet Witch uses may also be enhancing her control – a technique Wanda has used before for advanced spells, such as when she attempted to resurrect the mutants of Genosha in Empyre: X-Men. It’s also possible the staff is merely an extension of the Eldritch Orchard itself – Wanda has already speculated that she should have tremendous abilities within this realm.

This fantastic dimension was first glimpsed last issue, and the older Scarlet Witch seems to be able to mold it however she chooses. She uses her powers far more confidently than her younger self and is determined to teach Wanda a lesson. The possibility exists that the Eldritch Orchard will ultimately be what gives Wanda mastery of Chaos Magic, especially since her older self seems to be able to use it to travel through time and interface with the afterlife. While Old Lady Wanda’s crystalline staff is intriguing, the Eldritch Orchard appears to be the real future development that takes her powers to the next level.

Stories such as House of M and Avengers Disassembled have shown how powerful the Scarlet Witch is, but now Trial of Magneto is teasing the methods she could use to wield this power without losing control.
