Scream Henry Winklers Character Wasnt Supposed To Die (Why This Changed)

In the original script of the 1996 slasher film Scream, Henry Winkler’s character wasn’t supposed to die. That was changed by the studio to make the iconic meta-horror movie even more bloody and up the body count.

Directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, Scream kicked off the horror saga of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott and masked slasher villain Ghostface in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California. The supporting cast included the likes of Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Henry Winkler; the latter as the principal of Woodsboro High. After several of those famous faces are killed or gravely injured, it all culminates in the finale that sees one of the most famous killer reveals ever. So far, it’s inspired three sequels and a spin-off show – and Scream 5 may return to its starting point with Matthew Lillard teasing he may return to the Scream franchise.

Among the several murder victims of Ghostface in the first installment of the Scream franchise are high school student Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore) – who is killed off in the legendary opening scene – along with her boyfriend Steve. Principal Himbry is also murdered by the masked killer, as is Gale Weathers’ cameraman, Kenny. But Himbry was not initially supposed to be killed; the change to the original script was a very precise reaction to an oversight a studio executive picked up on.

Originally, Principal Himbry – played by Winkler, who was uncredited so that the movie’s promotions could focus instead on the young main cast – was not killed off by either of the Ghostface killers. But when Bob Weinstein, the head of Dimension Films, was reviewing Williamson’s script, he noticed that there was about a half an hour of the movie during which a murder did not happen. So, he instructed Williamson to kill of another character within those 30 minutes.

Ultimately, Williamson decided to write the death of Principal Himbry into the script of Scream. Himbry is a solid character in the movie, enforcing rules and shutting down Woodsboro High temporarily to ensure the safety of his students, but he’s brutally attacked and killed by Ghostface in his office. By writing in the murder of Himbry, Williamson actually ended up resolving a problem in the movie’s final act. Initially, he hadn’t been able to think of a good reason for several side characters to leave the house party scene, so that the killer could attack. The death of Himbry, though, would drive many of the teenagers to leave the party to go and see his corpse, allowing Scream to come to its explosive finale more naturally.
