Scrubs 10 Best Supporting Characters Ranked

The first eight seasons of Scrubs revolve around seven main characters with the ninth season providing a few additional ones. However, they don’t carry the show all on their own as they’re backed up by an outstanding supporting cast. These side characters provide countless laugh-out-loud moments and heartbreaking serious scenes themselves.

The tenure of each one varies, some stick around for the long haul, whereas others have short term stints – usually because they’re a patient who has been discharged or a partner who has broken up with one of the main characters.

Scrubs’ tendency to always add new faces to the series means that a lot of different supporting players appear throughout the comedy-drama’s nine seasons. But who are the best ones?

10 Jack

Scrubs 10 Best Supporting Characters Ranked

Dr. Cox and Jordan’s son Jack is born during season two, and once he grows into a toddler, he becomes a hilarious addition to the show. His parents are known for coming up with creative and harsh ways to insult people, and there’s something so funny about seeing little Jack’s attempts to do the same.

Although not all of the kid’s humor derives from rudeness as his childlike antics are comical too. From creating a brother using a stapler and a wall to pretending to be a helicopter by spinning a dirt-covered plant around, his juvenile shenanigans are a joy to behold.

9 Lloyd

Appearances from Lloyd are sparse during the early years of the comedy-drama. By the sixth season, though, he’s a fully-fledged side character that gets involved in a lot of different things around the hospital. He starts as a delivery driver, becomes a patient, joins an airband, temporarily replaces Doug in the Janitor’s Brain Trust, and drives an ambulance.

Initially, he seems to be an ordinary upbeat person, but gradually he reveals himself to be a drug addict who needs to fake his own death due to gambling debts. The more screen time Lloyd gets, the more ridiculous and humourous he becomes.

8 Kim

Kim is cool, confident, and comical right from her first appearance in season five. And once she enters into a relationship with J.D., she quickly establishes herself as one of the doctor’s best ever girlfriends.

Not only are the pair good together, but their romance arc is one of the most fascinating in the show, from the pregnancy reveal to the fake miscarriage to J.D. deciding if he can trust her again. Her lie about losing the baby does make her a morally questionable person, but she is an interesting character nonetheless.

7 Todd

Scrubs 10 Best Supporting Characters Ranked

The amazing thing about The Todd is that even though his character never develops much past being a dimwit who delivers constant sexual innuendos and high fives, he remains entertaining throughout the entire series.

Every time he emerges on screen, viewers are eager to see what innuendo or high five he’s going to give out next, as he does different ones each time. The layer of unpredictability that exists for a generally one-note character is what makes him so amusing.

6 Molly

The quirky psychiatrist Molly Clock is a side character during season four. Even though her time on the show is short, her weirdness mixed with her extremely positive personality makes her a memorable individual.

Plus, she is involved in several enjoyable episodes, like when she convinces Cox and Kelso that everyone has good in them, and also the time she becomes Elliot’s role model. It’s a shame Molly doesn’t appear more often in the series as she is a fun character.

5 Laverne

Although the character is stereotypical, the religious Laverne is still a valued member of the supporting cast. Her most humorous moments come when she is being a huge gossip or refusing to take other employee’s backtalk.

While she is mostly a comic relief character, she does provide a few great serious moments as well. For instance, when she clashes with Dr. Cox over her belief that everything happens for a reason. In that episode, she delivers a wonderful speech that puts the doctor in his place.

4 Doug

The nervous Doug is easily the most incompetent member of the Sacred Heart staff. In the early seasons, he’s known for regularly killing his patients. Then when he’s working in the morgue, he still makes mistakes like misplacing corpses and letting rigor mortis set in before collecting a body. Regardless of his role at the hospital, his ineptitude is always fun to watch.

In his later years, his involvement with The Janitor’s brain trust is very funny too, both as a member and also as someone trying to rejoin the group.

3 Dan

Scrubs 10 Best Supporting Characters Ranked

For someone who only features in a handful of episodes, J.D.’s brother Dan has great character development. When he first comes into the series, he’s an underachieving man still living in his mother’s attic, yet by the end, he’s a successful real estate agent with a house. His hilariously upbeat attitude and likable personality make his success all the more satisfying.

Throughout his appearances, viewers get to witness the compelling relationship he shares with his brother. J.D.’s shame then jealousy of Dan leads to a number of emotional moments.

2 Jordan

Scrubs 10 Best Supporting Characters Ranked

Dr. Cox’s ex-wife Jordan enters the series in season one and is immediately shown to be just as cruel and quick-witted as her ex-husband. She only appears sporadically in the first season, but eventually, she becomes a vital supporting character.

It’s her incredibly mean and often sarcastic comments that make her so entertaining. And unlike Dr. Cox, who sometimes uses cruelty as a teaching method, Jordan does it just for her own enjoyment. The character does have depth, though, as on rare occasions, she shows vulnerability and even kindness.

1 Ted

Ted starts the show as a sad, unfortunate lawyer who is forced to do Dr. Kelso’s bidding, but over time he develops into a slightly less sad, unfortunate lawyer, who has a girlfriend. While the character might not have a good life, he’s certainly a huge asset to the comedy-drama.

This is because, he is one of the funniest characters in the series, regardless of whether he’s singing with his band The Worthless Peons or simply reacting to the unbelievable misfortune he suffers. He’s kind-hearted too, as whenever he’s in a position to help someone, he does it without question, which creates some of Scrubs’ sweetest moments.
