Secret Wars Could Debut The MCUs XMen (Without A Canon Nightmare)

With several rumors and teases that the MCU could be headed for a multiversal Secret Wars crossover event, it could very well be the perfect vehicle to debut the X-Men (without creating a canon nightmare for both franchises). Thanks to Disney+ series such as Loki and the upcoming films Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it’s become evident that Phase 4 of the MCU has taken a large focus on introducing the multiverse, its threats, and the consequences of attempting to manipulate it. However, it also provides a plethora of new narrative opportunities for Marvel Studios, such as bringing Marvel’s mutants into the fold with minimal issues.

Having been owned by 20th Century Fox, the X-Men franchise stood apart from the MCU for years, featuring dynamic and epic films as well as box office duds alike, while also creating all kinds of continuity and timeline confusions as it progressed. However, with Disney’s recent purchase of 20th Century Fox, Marvel Studios now has the rights to the X-Men back. That being said, they have yet to fully integrate the existence of mutants or the X-gene into the MCU thus far.

Clearly, introducing the X-Men into the world where massive events such as Thanos’ Decimation and the Blip have already occurred could be a narrative challenge. Where have mutants been all this time? Why didn’t the X-Men help fight in Avengers: Endgame? This is the same criticism that Marvel’s upcoming Eternals are already facing, though the immortal beings have the built-in narrative excuse of non-interference unless the threat of Deviants are involved (whereas the X-Men in contrast do not). However, something like 2015’s Secret Wars would be able to introduce them with little issue, seeing as how the MCU version of the multiversal war would no doubt feature other realities and alternate worlds of heroes clashing together in an epic crossover, just like in the comics. In this way, the X-Men could simply be from another universe, explaining their absence in the MCU prior.

A multiversal war was teased by Loki’s He Who Remains, a variant of the time-traveling Kang the Conqueror. Additionally, Spider-Man will be facing the consequences of multiverse manipulation, hence Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus who’s more than likely coming from the universe of Sam Raimi trilogy of Spider-Man films. Furthermore, Doctor Strange’s sequel is literally titled Multiverse of Madness, suggesting misadventures through multiple alternate realities (could one of them be the X-Men’s?). As a result, a foundational precedent is potentially being formed already for Secret Wars, as well as the opportunity for the X-Men to debut within it.

While it remains to be seen whether or not the same actors such as James McAvoy’s Xavier and his students along with Michael Fassbender’s Magneto will be featured over brand new actors, a multiversal debut seems like the strongest and the cleanest possibility for the MCU’s continuity. What better way to integrate the X-Men into the MCU than by teaming up with the Avengers for a major threat that could merge their universes in the aftermath? While this is all still conjecture, Secret Wars feels like the perfect vehicle for the MCU to bring in their new mutants.
