See No Evil Kanes Slasher Jacob Goodnight Explained

Kane is one of WWE’s darkest characters, and the man behind him went on to become the brutal slasher villain Jacob Goodnight in See No Evil. Glenn Jacobs, who played Kane on WWE TV for over 20 years, and was recently inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, was by no means an overnight success in the wrestling business. Jacobs went through multiple terrible characters on the independent scene before making it to WWE, and once he got there, things didn’t get much better.

Jacobs first played Isaac Yankem, DDS in WWE, an evil dentist hired by Jerry “The King” Lawler to take out his then-nemesis Bret “The Hitman” Hart. When that didn’t work out, he went away for a bit, and returned as an arguably worse character, having been assigned the Diesel persona that Kevin Nash (of Magic Mike XXL) formerly played before he left for WCW. Recasting isn’t really a thing in wrestling, and this proved why, as WWE fans didn’t care about some Nash imitator calling himself Diesel.

In 1997 Jacobs finally became Kane, onscreen brother to wrestling legend The Undertaker, and one of WWE’s most enduring monsters. When WWE decided to create a film studio in the mid-2000s and kick things off with a horror film, Jacobs was the natural choice to star, playing the Kane-esque Jacob Goodnight in See No Evil.

Like the Kane character, Goodnight has quite the awful origin story. The primary reason he’s evil is that his mother, a religious zealot, abused him as a child. Once he grew up into a 7-foot monster of a man, she used him as a weapon to kill those she deemed to be sinners. In the underrated See No Evil and See No Evil 2, Jacob employs several methods of murder. Fitting the title of the films, Goodnight will often remove the eyes of his victims, either before or after their death. His most common weapon is a large meat hook, which he keeps on a chain and uses to skewer his prey.

In See No Evil, Jacob is felled by a three-on-one assault, impaled through the eye with a metal pole, and sent flying down several stories through a glass ceiling, until a falling piece of metal jabs straight through his heart. But despite this conclusive death, Jacob returned for See No Evil 2 almost a decade later, with no real explanation given as to how he could’ve possibly survived. Again, Jacob appears to be embalmed alive in the sequel, but somehow survives to make sure none of his targets escape. Perhaps, like Kane, Jacob has supernatural recuperative abilities. It remains to be seen if a See No Evil 3 will ever happen, as Glenn Jacobs is now the mayor of Knox County, Tennessee.
