Seinfeld: 5 Of The Main Characters’ Most Brilliant Schemes (& 5 That Were Doomed To Fail)

Seinfeld’s four main characters are constantly up to some sort of scheme, but only a few of them actually work and many end in complete disaster.

As every Seinfeld fan knows, by the end of the series, all four main characters are sentenced to prison for the wrongs they’ve committed throughout the show’s nine-season run. Part of what made the show so ceaselessly entertaining was the constant scheming of its main characters.

It seemed that Jerry, George, Kramer, and Elaine were always coming up with some devious ploy to accomplish even the simplest of goals. Of course, being a sitcom, these ploys often ended in disaster. Every now and then, however, one of them succeeded.

10 Worked: Kramer Gets The Statue

Elaine convinces Jerry to hire her client’s boyfriend, Ray, to clean his apartment. Jerry agrees, only to find that Ray stole Jerry’s statue while on the job. He needs to retrieve it, but Elaine is afraid that confronting Ray directly will disrupt her business relationship with Rava, Ray’s writer girlfriend.

They call in Kramer to pose as a detective to do their dirty work for them. Kramer forces Ray up against the wall, “searches” the place, puts the statue in his bag, and exits, letting Ray off with a “warning” for his various “crimes.”

9 Failed: “I’m O’Brien”

George’s car breaks down, stranding him at the airport, where he went to pick up Jerry. Wondering how to get home, they notice a chauffeur holding a sign that reads “O’Brien.” Jerry jokingly suggests they pose as O’Brien and take the free ride in the limo. George loves the idea, and says to the driver, “I’m O’Brien.”

Little did he know, “O’Brien” is an infamous nazi sympathizer who’s due to deliver a speech that night at Madison Square Garden. When the driver stops to pick up a couple of O’Brien’s associates, things go from bad to worse.

8 Worked: The Jacket

Kramer is determined to retrieve a prized jacket from his mother’s ex-boyfriend’s apartment. Elaine and Kramer go to meet the landlord, posing as Wanda Pepper and her fiancee, Professor Van Nostrand.

They convince the landlord to let them into the apartment and take the jacket. When he inadvertently insults Kramer by speaking ill of his mother, Kramer breaks character and attacks him. Despite this kink in the plan, they make it out with the jacket – mission accomplished.

7 Failed: The IQ Test Debacle

George’s girlfriend Monica wants him to take an IQ test. Afraid he’d perform badly, George gets Elaine to take it for him. He passes her the test out of Monica’s ground-floor window, setting the plot in motion. Elaine, however, can’t find a quiet place to take the exam, and so she gets a terrible score.

Embarrassed, George convinces Monica to let him retake it. This time, Elaine decides to take it at Jerry’s apartment, only to get locked in when Kramer uses the apartment to hide from his mother’s ex-boyfriend for successfully stealing his aforementioned jacket. George is left without a test to give to Monica, who then kicks him to the curb.

6 Worked: Field Of Vision

George gets caught staring at NBC executive Russell Dalrymple’s daughter, which causes Russell to cancel Jerry and George’s pending TV deal.

In order to win back his sympathy, Jerry, George, and Elaine track down Russell at Poppy’s restaurant, and Elaine successfully seduces him to the point where he gives her a similar stare to the one George gave his daughter. “Field of vision, huh?” says Russell. Just like that, the deal is back on.

5 Failed: The Rye

George plots to return a stolen rye bread to his future in-laws so they would never know it was gone. He plans for Kramer to take them out for a romantic horse and carriage ride, and for Jerry to bring the rye over while they’re gone. However, the carriage ride is cut short due to the horse’s flatulence, owing to the can of Beefarino Kramer fed it earlier that day.

When Jerry arrives, George yells at him from the window that the Rosses are back already, and that instead of coming in, he has to put the rye on a fishing hook so George can reel it in. The Rosses enter the room, catching him red-handed.

4 Worked: The Phone Message

George leaves an angry message on his girlfriend Carol’s answering machine, and later comes to regret it. He plans to swap the tapes in her machine so she never hears it, but feels he can’t do it himself. He and Jerry meet her at her apartment, where George distracts her long enough for Jerry to switch the tapes.

All of this, only to find out that Carol already heard the message, and thought it was just a joke. The plan ended up being for nothing, but it was successful nonetheless.

3 Failed: Kramer Gets Psyched

Elaine tries to break up with Dr. Reston, her psychiatrist boyfriend, but his psych training gives him a manipulative edge over her, which keeps her in the relationship. She has Kramer call his office and pretend to be her new lover, hoping this will scare him off.

Instead, Reston convinces Kramer to come see him at his office and talk the matter over. By the end of their discussion, Kramer is convinced that Elaine and Reston belong together and that they will make a wonderful couple. Meanwhile, downstairs, Elaine meets Joe Davola, one of Reston’s most unstable patients. This plan couldn’t have possibly gone worse.

2 Worked: The Julliar-Trained Dermatologist

After posing as the real Dr. Van Nostrand earlier in the series, Kramer reprised the role throughout the series, most famously in season nine’s “The Slicer.”

George needs to get a shirtless photo of his boss so he can doctor himself out of a photo taken over 10 years prior. He sets up a skin cancer screening at his office, and when Jerry’s real-life dermatologist girlfriend cancels at the last minute, Kramer disguises himself and plays the role of the “Julliard-trained dermatologist.” He succeeds in getting the photo, though he notices a mole he thinks is cause for concern.

1 Failed: Vandelay Industries

George tells his unemployment officer, Mrs. Sokel, that he recently interviewed for a position at the fictitious “Vandelay Industries.” He lists Jerry’s home phone number as the contact and tells Jerry that in order to help him keep the ruse going, he must answer as “Vandelay Industries” until further notice.

While George is using Jerry’s bathroom, however, Kramer answers the phone. It’s Mrs. Sokel, following up on her meeting with George. Kramer, unfortunately, is not hip to the scheme, and so he has no idea what she’s talking about when she asks for Vandelay Industries. George tries coaching him from the bathroom, and eventually runs out, panicked, with his jeans around his ankles. Alas, it’s too late. His plan has gone up in smoke.
