Sex & The Citys Kristin Davis Reveals She Auditioned For Monica On Friends

Kristin Davis reveals that before her role as Charlotte York on Sex and the City, she auditioned to be Monica Geller on Friends. Sex and the City first aired on HBO in 1998, and since the show ended in 2004, the cast has reunited for two movies and most recently for And Just Like That, a reboot that is currently HBO’s biggest series debut. The original series followed a group of four 35-year-old women in their lives and adventures in New York City. Davis worked alongside Sarah Jessica Parker, who played the series’ protagonist Carrie Bradshaw; Kim Cattrall, as Samantha Jones; and Cynthia Nixon, as Miranda Hobbes.

Friends is perhaps one of the most popular shows to come out of the ’90s. Originally premiering in 1994, the series follows a 6-person friend group: brother and sister Ross and Monica Geller (David Schwimmer and Courteney Cox), Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), and Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc). The sitcom was massively successful and ran for 10 seasons over ten years. It is still held in high regards by fans and continues to find a place in the zeitgeist despite ending 17 years ago. Most recently, the Friends cast reunited for the first time since the show ended, bringing back years of nostalgia to viewers worldwide.

As reported by ET Canada, in an interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Davis shared that before she joined the cast of Sex and the City, she auditioned to be Monica Geller. Corden suggests that Davis got close to landing the role before it went to Cox, but Davis clarifies that she wouldn’t call her audition “close” considering there were “like, 8,000 young ladies who read for Monica.” The role obviously went to Cox, but Davis remembers that prior to the premiere of the show she and Cox went to the same yoga class. Davis says Cox was very excited and confident about the pilot she had just worked on. Read Davis’ full comment below.

“I don’t think that we can saw quite close, okay. I think I was one of like, 8,000 young ladies who read for Monica and Courteney Cox got her. Courteney and I were in the same yoga class at the time, and we used to hang out. The rest of us were, like, unemployed actor-waitress types and we would hang out after class.

One day, Courteney was like, ‘Hey, guys. Do you want to come car shopping with me? We were like, ‘Wow, car shopping!’ Apparently the shopping trip coincided with the recording of the pilot episode…“[Courteney] said, ‘I did this pilot, I’m feeling really good about it. I think I’m going to buy a Porsche.’ We were like, ‘Wow, is she for real?’ It was ‘Friends’, and it did go very well.”

Cox took the role of Monica, and four years later, Davis found her place as Charlotte. However, in a fun twist of fate, Davis did eventually appear on Friends in a short guest star role. Davis played a woman named Eric, who was briefly Joey’s girlfriend in season 7, episode 7 “The One with Ross’s Library Book.” Davis also appeared in other cornerstone ’90s sitcoms, including Seinfeld and Melrose Place.

Friends and Sex and the City are both iconic shows of the ’90s, and they share a lot of overlap in their basic premises. Both series follow a group of friends and focuses on the found family trope that many young audiences seek and identify with while exploring adulthood and all that comes with growing up. It’s easy to see why audiences still hold so much love for these shows. Imagining anyone else but Cox as Monica is impossible, just as it’s impossible to imagine anyone else but Davis as Charlotte. Cox and Davis have their career-defining roles, and while a Friends reboot may never happen, Davis’ return as Charlotte satisfies a nostalgia for the character and Sex and the City.
