Shadow & Bone Showrunner Teases Wylans Introduction for Season 2

Warning: Spoilers for Shadow and Bone Season 1

Shadow and Bone showrunner Eric Heisserer reveals that Wylan, a character from the novels who was missing during season 1, will enter the show in season 2. The Netflix show is based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha series, which comprises a trilogy (Shadow and Bone) and duology (Six of Crows). Both take place within the same universe, but the events of the duology occur many years later. The show draws its name from the first book in the trilogy and incorporates characters from Six of Crows.

Like the first book in Bardugo’s series, Netflix’s Shadow and Bone is set in the Kingdom of Ravka (loosely based on real-world Russia), which includes a geographical region that literally embodies the force of darkness. Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) is an orphan and assistant cartographer who learns that she possesses ancient magical powers during a journey into the Shadow Fold. Alina finds herself joining an exclusive army of others with the rare ability to manipulate the elements known as Grisha. The series also follows a group of young outcasts from Six of Crows—Kaz, Inej, Jesper, and Nina—who are hunting the Sun Summoner (Alina) for a bounty. Wylan Van Eck is a key character in Six of Crows, the dyslexic son of wealthy businessman Jan Van Eck who runs away and joins Kaz’s group of thieves.

Bardugo and Heisserer revealed that Wylan will enter the series in season 2 during a recent interview with Collider. Heisserer’s adaptation merges the timelines of the trilogy and the duology by following the main characters of the latter during the time of the former. Where the Six of Crows books take place some years later, the Netflix series imagines what the Dregs were up to during the events of Shadow and Bone in order to eliminate confusion and allow the characters of both to come together. Heisserer says Wylan will make his debut in season 2, which the showrunner also hopes will show more of Ketterdam, an island city where much of Six of Crows takes place:

Heisserer: I would love to talk about what we might get to see from Six of Crows in the second season. I can tease this much that there will be a hundred percent more Wylan. We’d like to introduce him for sure. And we would like to spend at least a little bit more time in Ketterdam. We kind of had to yoink our Crows away from that in Season 1 and throw them toward the Fold and beyond for their heist. And I think at least part of next season should be a home game for our team.

Bardugo: For me, the big thing, I want to see Sturmhond, the Privateer. I want to see Wylan, who is the only pro we don’t get to see in Season 1. I’d love to see Tolya and Tamar. The problem with seeing your characters brought to life by fabulous actors is that it makes you very greedy, and I would be thrilled to see who we could find to play what are quite challenging roles. There’s just so much story.

All eight episodes of season 1 premiered in full on April 23 to overall positive reviews. Netflix hasn’t greenlit Shadow and Bone season 2 yet, but the buzz surrounding season 1, bolstered by Bardugo’s existing fanbase, will likely be reason enough to justify a continuation of the series. It’s clear that Heisserer and Bardugo have already started making plans for how to configure the Grishaverse’s seven installments into potential future seasons.

Heisserer’s prequel storyline proposes that Kaz and his crew were bounty hunters in the years before Six of Crows takes place, a mission that’s more in step with the main plot Netflix’s Shadow and Bone. In the books, the Dregs are working for Wylan’s father Jan, who hires Kaz to free the inventor of a powerful drug from military prison. Kaz keeps Wylan around as potential leverage in his dealings with Jan should they go wrong. Because Wylan’s position in the group is tied to his father’s involvement and the crew’s specific mission in the duology, it wouldn’t have made sense for Heisserer and Bardugo to shoehorn his character into season 1. Wylan’s season 2 storyline would depend on whether the series catches up with Six of Crows, which may be determined by how many more seasons are in store for Shadow and Bone. With the Crows heading back to Ketterdam at the end of season 1 and Wylan entering the story, the series is positioned to begin weaving in details from the duology.
