Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit films’ action largely take place away from The Shire, but fans know some of the franchises’ best moments are there.

Within both Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, the characters get to explore various areas of Middle Earth during their adventures. However, it is The Shire that becomes the most iconic and picturesque location fans remember the most from these movies.
Even though the action itself takes place outside of this area, it is the home for so many of the most important characters within the franchise. It is also the location for some of the best scenes within these movies, and while there might not be major sword fights or overly dramatic world-saving moments, there are still some great scenes to be found.
10 The Dwarves Arrive
In The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins is left stunned when the company of dwarves ends up arriving unexpectedly at his home. One by one they arrive, each louder than the next as they cause mayhem, eating and drinking everything in sight.
Bilbo isn’t aware of what situation he’s ended up in as they try to explain the situation to him about their mission. The interactions of the dwarves are brilliant and Bilbo’s reactions to it all only makes the scenes funnier.
9 Homeward Bound
After everything Frodo, Pippin, Merry, and Sam go through, giving them their moment back at The Shire afterward was great to see. There aren’t many words in these scenes, but it shows them returning home in the end, enjoying a beer, and eventually Sam’s wedding.
The scene in the pub is the best part of this montage, though, as it really pushes the impact the journey has had on them. They’re all relieved to be home, but it’s clear parts of them haven’t returned, in what is a smartly shot interaction, without a word being uttered.
8 Gandalf Arrives In The Shire
One of the earliest moments from The Shire sees Gandalf first arrive. It’s the first time that the wizard is showcased, and his warm personality and connection with Frodo is instantly highlighted. He turns up with his horse and cart as he is around to be at Bilbo’s birthday party.
He speaks eloquently and it’s obvious how highly Frodo thinks of him. But it is the fun moment when he lets off the fireworks for the young Hobbits that really makes this scene a memorable one, really proving what a nice person Gandalf is.
7 “That’s What Bilbo Baggins Hates”
When the Dwarves are in full flow of excitement inside Bilbo Baggins’ home, they decide to break out into song. It’s a merry moment and pushes the party atmosphere which suits them as characters brilliantly and creates a funny moment within the movie.
Bilbo has had enough and wants them out, but while they sing and throw around all of his cutlery, they’re actually cleaning up for him. It shows them as fun characters, but also people who do understand and think about others. It’s not a serious scene, but it’s a memorable one.
6 “I’m Going On An Adventure”
After Bilbo Baggins wakes up and realizes the dwarves and Gandalf have left, he decides to join them after all, which leads to a hilarious and iconic scene from the original movie in The Hobbit trilogy. Bilbo is shown thinking everything over, silently, until he sprints out of his home and through The Shire.
The scene gives a nice overview of The Shire as a place, which hadn’t really happened before, plus seeing the excitement of Bilbo was a nice touch. There’s subtle comedy thrown in too when he finally does meet up with the company as they exchange money based on their bets.
5 Gandalf Comes For Tea
When Gandalf first arrives for Bilbo’s birthday party, he gets there for the day and spends time with Bilbo first, having a drink of tea with him. It’s a brilliant scene as Gandalf is clearly keeping an eye on Bilbo and how he’s behaving, while he’s also enjoying a genuine moment with him.
It’s a case of two old friends catching up and it’s great to see. This is a scene that is actually even stronger when fans rewatch it having seen The Hobbit movies, understanding the relationship they have even further.
4 Bilbo’s Birthday Party
The actual party scenes that take place for Bilbo Baggins are tons of fun, kickstarting The Lord Of The Rings franchise in quite an upbeat manner. Whether it’s Bilbo telling his stories or Pippin and Merry misbehaving and getting caught by Gandalf, these scenes are just enjoyable to watch.
That’s the manner in which people think of The Shire, as a happy place, and this is the best example of that. Of course, the party ends with a bang, too — and that isn’t just the fireworks — with Bilbo disappearing as he uses the One Ring.
3 The Misty Mountains
While the dwarves singing earlier in the movie is a great scene, this is a different moment; one that is far more emotional and filled with heart. Here, Thorin sings about the Misty Mountains and the reason the group is in the situation they’re in.
It provides a somber moment with all of the company looking upset as they’re deep in thought. It’s a catchy song that is performed well here, but it’s all about the emotion and heart that is being pushed throughout the scene which makes it so great.
2 Good Morning
The first time Gandalf and Bilbo Baggins interact in The Hobbit is a hilarious one. Gandalf interrupts Bilbo while he smokes his pipe, and they have a polite, yet slightly awkward and strange interaction together. Bilbo makes it clear that an adventure isn’t something he wants, while Gandalf makes it clear it’s what he’s going to get.
However, Gandalf does it in quite a mysterious manner, and it’s smartly done to put more youth into him as a character. The scene is funny and sets the tone for the first movie perfectly, with this being the start of their great bond.
1 Leaving The Shire
It’s strange that the best scene to take place in The Shire would be Sam and Frodo leaving it, but this really is a tremendous moment for the franchise. With Gandalf taking them so far, instructing Frodo to keep the ring safe, they then begin their journey together.
It’s a key point because while they might have help along the way, the entire journey for them is by each other’s sides. The moment when Sam hesitates to leave is an emotional one, but it shows the trust they have in each other as friends, which makes for a great bonding moment and a perfect scene.
