ShangChi Dunks On Hawkeyes Powers

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings.

In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Awkwafina’s Katy jokes that she saves the day through her newfound archery skills, but in the process potentially diminishes Hawkeye’s value as an Avenger by making his “powers” seem less impressive. The climax of the film is full of incredible moments that audiences have come to expect from an MCU movie. Shang-Chi battles both his father, Wenwu, and the soul-consuming entity the Dweller-in-Darkness, while its minions wage war against the villagers of Ta Lo and the Ten Rings.

The Great Protector (a water dragon) joins the fight but is overwhelmed by the Dweller-in-Darkness, who begins to take its soul. At this moment Katy shoots an arrow through the Dweller’s neck, turning the tide of the battle. In the aftermath of the climactic fight, Katy jokes that “I seriously thought we were going to die and I’d only learned to shoot an arrow the day before.”

Katy’s comment, while amusing, does somewhat dilute the qualities that Hawkeye brings to the table. Clint Barton’s place as an Avenger has always been the butt of jokes dating back to his early comic book appearances. He is human and has no actual superpowers to speak of. In Avengers: Age of Ultron he himself points out the absurdity of battling an army of robots with nothing but a bow and arrow. Notwithstanding this, he’s spent a lifetime mastering his marksmanship, and in the MCU it’s these skills that set him apart from being just another agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., rising to the rank of Avenger. The fact that Katy could, with minimal training, make a crucial shot worthy of Hawkeye’s accuracy risks lowering his status among the pantheon of MCU heroes.

Katy’s defining moment is indeed a one-in-a-million shot and something of a Deus ex Machina story-wise. The film does not reveal whether the shot was pure luck or an indication of some higher ability. However, the evolution of her character from best friend/sidekick to a hero in her own right is one of the highlights of the film. At the end of the movie, she and Shang-Chi are summoned by Wong to the Sanctum Sanctorum. Wong treats Shang-Chi and Katy as equals, indicating that she will continue her hero journey in Phase 4 and beyond. Therefore while Katy’s archery remarks appear at first to inadvertently downgrade Hawkeye’s skills, they could also be laying the groundwork for her to eventually ascend to his level.

Katy is an original character in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and is not bound by any comic book history. While she and Shang-Chi make a compelling double act, she’s not necessarily limited to just his corner of the MCU. Her newfound archery skills could therefore find her crossing paths with Clint Barton at some point in the future, potentially in the upcoming Disney+ show Hawkeye at the end of the year.
