A fan of The Simpsons published an online demonstration of the methods he used to recreate the hugely popular Hit & Run video game.

Entitled “How I Remade The Simpsons Hit and Run in a Week,” the video, created by YouTuber reubs, discloses what programs were employed, the steps taken and even the sources of the software he needed to revamp the 2003 action-adventure game. Crediting the Unreal Engine software and spanning about 12 minutes, the dense and informative segment is narrated by the enthusiast and contains no shortage of onscreen gameplay.

“Growing up, my childhood was really not the best,” relates reubs. “Most of my best memories were not spent on the playground with the cool kids. They were spent in my room playing this game.” Reminiscing about his experiences while delving into the intrigue of the game’s plot, the creator spends most of the video’s runtime walking viewers through his process for remaking The Simpsons: Hit & Run.

Speaking to the challenge of integrating animations into the gameplay, the narrator focuses on the creation of Homer’s character near the start of the clip. “How do I transform this character from a blob of blue Play-Doh into Homer? Well, I have to find a Homer model online,” he answers himself.

Showing well-earned pride in his work, the modest technician pinned a comment from Joe McGinn beneath his video which reads, “Hi, I’m the lead designer on the original game. Amazing what you accomplished! Really gives a taste of what a full modern remaster could be. Impressive work!”

If you want to understand why a fan would go to all the effort of remaking The Simpsons: Hit & Run, it might take a while to find a copy. The GTA clone was released in 2003 for PlayStation 2, GameCube and the original Xbox. While a version was released for PC, the game is so old that it requires several significant mods to run on modern hardware.
