Sims 5 Should Be An Urbz Sims In The City 2 Game Instead

The Sims 4 continues to grow with new content on a regular basis, leaving an opening to change the setting completely with a new title in the series. The constant growth of The Sims 4 through content drops and expansions has taken the game through many new scenarios within the game’s world, and each expansion has added new ways for players to explore it. This makes for a logical next step when the series finally jumps to a fifth game: revisiting one of the earliest Sims spin-off titles.

Released in 2004 exclusively on consoles, The Urbz: Sims in the City introduced players to a whole new city, unlike any space the franchise has seen before or since. The title took place in Urbzville, a city split up into nine different districts that were each populated by a different type of Urb. It was up to players to take their own Urb up the social ladder and build their Reputation in order to gain access to what each district had to offer. As The Sims focuses on the inherent family unit of the Sims and their lives, Urbz instead placed an emphasis on the Urb’s notoriety in the city.

Sims 4’s numerous expansions to its setting have continued to add new career paths for players to explore and new systems for fans to toy with in regards to their Sims’ place in the ever-growing world. However, the base of the game remains much the same with foundational goals at play through the whole title – only with more options. As Sims 4 continues to see support through content drops, DLC, and expansions, it gives the franchise an opportunity to start fresh from a new base and revisit Urbzville.

Why The Sims 5 Should Revisit Urbzville

Aspects of Urbz: Sims in the City have found their way to The Sims 4, albeit in altered fashion (even if it’s most recently put Sims in the country). The ability to live in an apartment in the city as well as the Reputation meter have both made returns within DLC expansions to Sims 4, but within the context of the current game, Reputation cannot be expanded into their original functions. Reputation was used as a manner of gauging an Urb’s progress through Urbzville, gaining access to VIP rooms, new districts, and even the ability to hang out with different crews whether the player’s Reputation was positive or negative. Reputation could also be used to affect more modern touches.

Implementing new jobs set more squarely in city life and the Reputation of a player’s Urb could add to the variety and interactivity of jobs in future Sims titles. Urbz enabled players to tag property originally, so expanding on this with the ability to become a graffiti artist can allow an Urb to develop properly into the role. Various extreme sports could also be explored as a way for an Urb to make a name for themselves. EA could effectively use their own sports licenses (such as with the UFC) to allow an Urb to pursue mixed martial arts, for instance. EA has not been shy about crossovers within The Sims, so using some of their own sports licenses could provide a real-life boost to the game’s outlandish world.

One of the biggest benefits to this would be for music. In the original Urbz release, players could meet and interact with the Black Eyed Peas, who contributed Simlish-based songs to the game’s soundtrack. Similarly, a new Urbz title could feature different hip-hop, rap, or even punk and rock artists as representatives of different districts with their own sense of style and scene. Separating the districts with various different music scenes could give players a chance to further personalize the style of their city-going Sim (rather than being locked into being a concert pianist if pursuing the music career) while also creating a unique backdrop to each and every district like a living, breathing city.

With the technology available today, along with EA’s extensive use of licensing, a new Urbz title has all of the tools to grow beyond its original, limited state. While The Sims 4 continues its push with new content, it leaves space for a brand-new game with a unique setting, new career paths, and new Sims systems that build on the old. Focusing on the systems that made Urbz a unique spinoff from the Sims franchise and expanding on them could give players a choice in their Sim’s lifestyle without falling into a pit of redundancy. The trappings of the game’s initial focus on suburban life plague The Sims 4’s attempts at urban living in a way that only a clean slate and a bridge to Urbzville can rectify.
