It’s hard to believe that the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is nearing its tenth anniversary, but time flies when one is having fun. Throughout the last decade, the modding community has come out in full force, making Skyrim the number one most-modded game in history. For all intents and purposes, it shows no signs of slowing down, either.
As gamers anxiously await the release of mega-mods like Skyblivion and Skywind, mod creators are still busily cranking out new content that changes the graphics, gameplay, sound, and in-game loot, oftentimes for the better. Even though 2021 has just begun, here are ten mods that are already making some serious waves.
10 DX Dark Knight Armor
One can never have too many armor sets to craft and hunt for in-world, but not all armor mods are alike. It’s hard to find armor sets that truly stand out as unique among vanilla and third-party content. Thankfully, there are mods like DX Dark Knight Armor, which bring lore-friendly armor into the game for players to enjoy.
This armor set is totally unique, yet still instantly recognizable for its nod to fantasy armor seen in many Hollywood films, TV shows, and video games. It also comes in three material variants for choosy players. That, and it just looks incredible, which is oftentimes the most important thing.
9 JK’s Mods
Technically, this is not one mod, but a collection of many from famed Skyrim mod author jkrojmal, whose mods are considered necessary staples for anyone who wants to trick out their game experience with some high quality, immersive content. This time, JK is tackling a wealth of new interiors including halls, shops, and palaces.

8 Skyrim Border Holds
One of the main complaints of vanilla Skyrim was the rather noticeable lack of anything resembling a large population. The game felt uninhabited, sprinkling its citizens across only a few towns and cities. Any time modders expand the population with new content, it’s a good thing, and that goes for Skyrim’s borders as well.
Skyrim Border Holds adds 17 new locations around Skyrim that help sell the believability of a province under guard. Watchmen keep tabs on who comes and goes, and their camp integrations work well within the world space, adding another layer of believability into the game.
7 Wyrmstooth
Technically, Wyrmstooth isn’t a new mod. In fact, it’s one of the most ambitious mods ever to have landed on Skyrim, but it disappeared from servers a few years ago following some issues, to much fan dismay. Now, it seems like this mega-sized mod is back, and now’s a great time to add it to one’s load order.
Wyrmstooth is a DLC-sized mod with a separate island to explore within the fictional world of Tamriel, which is loaded with quests, dungeons, loot, and more. This updated version of the classic mod adds even more content to an already packed game, making it the definitive version. Special Edition players are highly advised to give it a shot.
6 CleverCharff’s AIO
Skyrim players new to modding may find themselves confused at the sheer amount of content available for download. That’s why it’s important to consider AIO (all-in-one) texture mod packs that tackle a variety of locations, instead of hand-picking them one by one. There are many mod authors who do this, including the aforementioned jkrojmal, but those who want a different take may be interested in CleverCharff’s AIO.
This mod pack covers almost all of Skyrim’s towns and locations, and players can choose between 1K, 2K, and 4K texture variants, depending on their computer. It covers everything from Castle Volkihar, to caves and dungeons, ruins, and cities. Download it to jumpstart your load order, and save some time.
5 TheSkulled’s Food Overhaul
There are a few mods floating around that attempt to give Skyrim’s food an actual purpose. As many gamers already know, there’s really no point to food in the vanilla base game, which makes it redundant. TheSkulled’s Food Overhaul attempts to change this by giving players a justifiable reason for carrying it around.
The price of said food and drink has changed, forcing gamers to consider this before venturing out. Different items will provide character buffs, while others, such as alcohol, can include penalties as well. Even cooked food has a place, as opposed to raw, which can have negative consequences. This adds a little more realism to the game.
4 Playable Dawi Race (Dwarf)
Skyrim players anxious to unleash their inner Gimli can try out Playable Dawi Race (Dwarf), which adds the dwarven race to the list of playable characters. The skeleton for the character model has been modified to suit the mod, allowing gamers to jump right in.
Warhammer players know the Dawi best as the dwarven race of that particular franchise, which makes its inclusion in Skyrim a bit less lore-friendly than one might feel comfortable with. However, Skyrim’s open-ended approach to modding means it’s okay to throw caution to the wind, once in a while.
3 Absolute Basics
A major gripe that many Skyrim players coming off of Morrowind expressed was the dumbing down of the RPG system, specifically when it came to character progression. Any character could learn any skill, at any time, for any reason. This essentially diluted the concept of building characters based on their respective classes.
Absolute Basics attempts to undo this by making it much harder to be a jack of all trades. It places restrictions on players and forces them to learn skills or seek out teachers in order to unlock perks. For instance, a player with no archery experience would not be able to equip a bow, just as those without certain magical knowledge will not be able to instantly wield spells. This provides an extra level of challenge, even for seasoned Skyrim players.
2 Dirt And Blood HD Retexture
Gamers who like to roll around in the muck and get neck-deep in combat will appreciate Dirt And Blood HD Retexture, a mod that does precisely as its title suggests, and more. It sports multiple layers of dirt and blood that build up over time, adding to the grittiness and realism of Skyrim combat.
The mod is fully compatible with another popular mod called Enhanced Blood Textures SE and draws assets from that particular mod. The two are recommended to be paired up in order to bring a level of grisly realism to the game.
1 Grummite Weaponry – Mhail Weapons And Shields
Gamers looking for a more unique set of weapons may wish to install this pack that includes a number of melee weapons and shields for use in the game. They may not be lore-friendly in the strictest sense, but their brutal and rustic designs do fit in, nonetheless.
Grummite Weaponry sports items made from organic sources, which is an interesting take on the weapons category. Shields are made from crab carapaces, bows are made from bone reinforced with iron, and cudgels sport an iron ball covered in barnacles. Definitely an imaginative mod.
