Slime Rancher How to Get Slime Fossils and What Theyre For

Slime Rancher is an exercise in constant escalation. Players enter the classic farming game loop of gathering resources to upgrade their farm, which will give them more resources to further upgrade their farm.

This is why it’s important for players to get The Lab farm expansion relatively early. It’s how the player gets most of their new gadgets and upgrades.

Of course, even with the lab, players still need to gather ingredients and craft each gadget. For players who want to fully explore and exploit the map, finding slime fossils in Slime Rancher is a must.

Where To Find Slime Fossils

The good news is, unlike Slime Rancher’s Indigonium, slime fossils are not restricted to certain areas of the map. Players can plop a drill down and theoretically find them anywhere, and there doesn’t seem to be specific areas where their drop rate improves.

The bad news is that they’re an uncommon drill resource, so it still may take a while to find some. Thankfully, their chances of finding uncommon and rare drops increase as they upgrade their drill. The tier 4 titan drill is 5 times more likely to drop a slime fossil than the novice drill.

Making Decorations and Curios with Slime Fossils

The functional purpose of the slime fossils isn’t immediately clear. The majority of the recipes that require it are decorations and curios, which aren’t exactly game-changing.

The decorations that use slime fossils in their crafting recipes are:

The curio recipes that use slime fossils are:

Making Utilities and Warp Tech with Slime Fossils

While these recipes are in the minority, they’re the most useful. Players should prioritize them over the decorations. Players can use 4 slime fossils, alongside 8 of Slime Rancher’s wild honey, 12 hunter plort, and 20 pink plort, in order to make a taming bell. This will temporarily turn nearby wild slimes docile, making them easy to capture.

They can also use 10 slime fossils, 20 hunter plort, 10 spiral streams, and 10 hexacomb to make a Master Gordo Snare. This is the only way to capture the massive gordo slimes whole.

The most important use of slime fossils comes in Slime Rancher’s warp tech. They’re required to make warp depots, which allow players to warp items from any two points on the map, no matter how far apart. This is critical once the majority of the island has opened up. Players won’t have to repeatedly lug their hauls back and forth.

Slime Rancher is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
