Sonic The Hedgehog’s EndCredits Scene Explained

WARNING: Spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic the Hedgehog’s end-credits scene introduces Tails to the movie universe, setting up a sequel with a grander scope and more ties to the video games. Here’s what it all means.

For the majority of its runtime, Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action/CGI hybrid family film very much in the vein of many a cartoon reboot, from Rocky and Bullwinkle to Alvin and the Chipmunks. However, there’s tastes of something greater and more in-line with the games. Audiences are introduced to the blue speedster (in Baby Sonic form) in a perfect recreation of Green Hill Zone where he zips and loops-the-loop under the watchful eye of new owl mentor Longclaw. It’s brief, but grounds the Montana-set story in something bigger. Then, at the end of the movie, Dr. Robotnik is trapped in Mushroom Hill Zone (described throughout as a planet), getting his full Eggman getup.

But the biggest moment for gaming fans comes not in recreating levels, but introducing characters. Sonic the Hedgehog’s mid-credits scene sets up a much bigger cast for the sequel. Welcome, Tails.

Sonic The Hedgehog End-Credits: Tails Comes To Green Hill

Sonic The Hedgehog’s EndCredits Scene Explained

Sonic the Hedgehog’s post-credits scene begins with a pan out from Green Hill (the town, not to be confused with the Zone or planet where Sonic comes from). On a cliff above, leaves begin to rustle and swirl, forming a short column as the wind increases before a gold ring, the form of teleportation between worlds used throughout the movie, opens. The location on the other side is obscured by bright light, but a figure jumps out in silhouette, landing with the camera focusing on his red-and-white shoes and orange legs.

The creature gets out a tracker and the camera revolves around to confirm that, yes, this is Tails, Sonic’s flying companion. Reading the scanner (presumably) sensing Sonic, Tails excitedly states “If these readings are accurate, he’s here. I’ve found him! I just hope I’m not too late.” His big tail then splits in two and spins like a helicopter, taking him off the ground and speeding down towards Green Hill.

Tails In Sonic The Hedgehog Games Explained

While Sonic is an instantly recognizable icon, his supporting cast isn’t quite as pervasive (at least compared to that of Nintendo’s Mario family). But by far the most recognizable of the support is Miles “Tails” Prower (the real name was his Japanese original, with SEGA of America creating the descriptive nickname), a bright orange fox with two tails that allow him to fly. He was introduced as the second player’s character in 1992’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2, eventually getting the ability to fly in the third game in 1994.

Although Tails is very much conceived in the sidekick mold of Luigi – he eventually appeared in his own games alongside his multiplayer duties, and has been a backdrop of many subsequent Sonic-only games alongside the likes of Knuckles and Shadow, as well as the various early-1990s animated shows – there was an extra layer to him than Mario’s brother. Due to coming a little later in gaming history, his design was more distinct than a recoloring from the off, and has a more distinctly developed personality: Tails is a wide-eyed, optimistic fox mocked for his dual appendage who greatly looks up to the supportive Sonic. That said, the drop in Sonic’s long-term popularity and success has seen him become more of a niche presence in recent years, as Luigi’s distinction has only rose.

Who Voices Tails In Sonic The Hedgehog’s End-Credits Scene?

Sonic The Hedgehog’s EndCredits Scene Explained

One of the biggest questions coming out of Sonic the Hedgehog’s post-credits scene is who voices Tails. Jim Carrey is Eggman and Ben Schwartz is Sonic, so the expectation is definitely for a named actor. However, despite rumors of Tails casting when the movie was in early development, there’s nobody credited with lending the voice.

It’s entirely possible that the current voice for Tails is merely a placeholder, and will be filled properly when or if a Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is greenlit. For now, we’ll ensure to update this article when the Tails voice actor is known.

Tails’ Role In Sonic The Hedgehog 2: Why Has He Come To Earth?

Sonic The Hedgehog’s EndCredits Scene Explained

The pressing question for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is why Tails has come to Green Hill to find Sonic in the first place. The most logical – and hopeful – reasoning is that this scene takes place a little later than the rest of the movie and Dr. Robotnik’s banishment to Mushroom Hill Zone, with the mad scientist able to gain the stranglehold on the various worlds akin to his game counterpart: he is now a threat to Spring Yard, Sky High, Emerald Hill and all other zones, and Tails (allied no doubt with Knuckles) need to get Sonic to help take him down. All that points towards a more video game accurate sequel.

Beyond plot, there’s how Tails will be adapted for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The most interesting aspect of the character is, of course, his ability to fly. But his connection to aeronautics goes beyond just that, with various materials highlighting his pilot and mechanical skills. Given the focus on character and the real-world in Sonic the Hedgehog, that side of his abilities will surely have to play a role. What’s less clear is how Tails’ personality will be translated. In his first movie, Sonic was hidden from human society, longing to be accepted and involved. That’s a far cry from his usual confidence, and could lead to a different relationship between the fox and the hedgehog. Indeed, there’s no way the pair met before given Sonic’s childhood as shown in the movie’s opening.

Which Other Characters Could Appear In Sonic The Hedgehog 2?

Tails is far from the only supporting character in Sonic games, and if the movies are planning to bring in more, there’s some great options. The most obvious after Miles Prower is Knuckles the Echidna, the final part of the games’ main trio. And, in terms of popularity, Shadow the Hedgehog (a rival to Sonic created by Eggman’s grandfather), would be another strong pick.

What both Knuckles and Shadow have in common is that they were introduced as antagonists to Sonic and Tails before turning to their side. That creates an immediate conflict and easy way to introduce both characters, as well as ensuring Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik has plenty more scenery-chewing potential in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
