The Star Wars galaxy is home to plenty of incredibly diverse planets, with each location offering up something unique for audiences to explore. While plenty has been seen in video games in the past, it’s rare to get an open-world title that focuses entirely on a single planet.

If that were to ever happen again, though, there are some wonderful contenders that are packed full of storytelling potential. Whether they have already hosted brilliant moments, hold mysteries that deserve to be uncovered, or have gone unappreciated for too long, LucasFilm Games would certainly be wise to take advantage of these amazingly designed locations.

Coruscant

Fans know that Coruscant was heavily featured in the prequel trilogy and was given further focus in the Clone Wars animated series. There’s a depth to the planet that just hasn’t been explored enough in video games though, with each level bringing with it new, gritty adventures for audiences to be taken on.

There are so many different stories to tell with a city spanning a whole globe, considering the crime and corruption, politics, and even the Jedi religion influencing the citizens of Coruscant in every aspect of their lives. The canceled 1313 might have been able to do this complex planet justice but it might take next-gen technology to allow Coruscant to be completely open-world!

Mustafar

Mustafar might be one of the harshest planets in sci-fi history but its legacy will always be the creation of Darth Vader. The Sith Lord eventually adopted a fortress on the volcanic landscape; a location that not only reminded him of his past but was easy to defend against his enemies.

Mustafar has only been seen from a very specific viewpoint though. An open-world game could not only allow players to explore other aspects of this firey world but also dive into the past of the Sith, considering the dark energy is so potent on Mustafar. For a well-known planet, it’s been given quite a two-dimensional portrayal outside of the Lord’s castle.

Dathomir

The Nightsisters and Brothers originate from Dathomir with the likes of Darth Maul, Savage Opress, Asajj Ventress, and Mother Talzin originating from the mysterious planet. It’s a location that’s been explored countless times in the animated shows, reading material like Dark Disciple by Christie Golden and even Jedi: Fallen Order.

Yet, despite its appearances, the mystery of the sorcerer and darkness on Dathomir continues to haunt and intrigue audiences. It’s very easy to imagine a full game set on the planet, which has a number of populated cities and witchcraft-inspired temples to visit.

Naboo

Another planet made famous by the prequels, Naboo is a largely peaceful world that has acted more as a diplomatic opponent to the Separatist alliance before fading into obscurity. The lush fauna and flora of the planet and gorgeous architecture are enough to intrigue any space traveler to visit.

But fans also know that Naboo hosts a complex political system, as well as a diverse set of civilizations. The Gungans also try to co-exist in this location, and there are clear class and monetary divides across Naboo. An open-world thriller based on these conflicts would make for a compelling narrative to follow on a stunning planet.

Mandalore

Is there a planet more famous than Mandalore in terms of its people? Mandalorians have a complicated history of their own as different factions ultimately try to decide the future of a world that’s constantly at war. Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Mandalorian have all filled in different parts of Mandalore’s timeline.

Audiences are eager to revisit Mandalore after the siege and see what remains. The planet has rarely been shown outside of the cities so there’s a whole wide world out there to flesh out further. Plus, an open-world game based upon this civilization would also open the door to their rich culture as well.

Nal Hutta

Nal Hutta is of course the location that the Hutt family would call their home. The swampy planet is grotesque in its appearance but also hosts some of the galaxy’s most dangerous smugglers, bounty hunters, and crime lords. No one would want to get stuck on this wasteland.

It’s the reason why Nal Hutta is likely a great location for a Star Wars open-world game. With the player getting trapped on this awful planet, they’d have to survive against the Hutts themselves and the beasts that lurk beneath the marshes.

Rentor

Rentor is a location rarely discussed despite it being such a crucial planet. Thrawn, one of the most popular characters from both the Legends and Canon timeline of Star Wars originates from this planet, which can be found in the unmapped regions of space.

It’s a planet that fans have never seen on screen before and although it has been described on the page it might be a perfect place to boast an open-world game. Hosting the Chiss Ascendancy not only does this Empire provide interesting avenues for storytelling, but the Unknown Regions, in general, are bursting with fascinating cultures and peoples to investigate.

Exegol

In regards to the Unknown Regions, Star Was recently introduced audiences to the ancient Sith planet known as Exegol which was home to the First Order and the rise of Emperor Palpatine once more. The dark and dreary world holds many dangerous secrets.

There’s clearly a whole civilization present on this planet, but audiences have yet to see the full range of temples, artifacts, and dark lords that roam these terrifying terrains. If LucasFilm Games are planning a Sith-led title then Exegol is a great open-world location to set it in.

Ahch-To

Luke Skywalker managed to live amongst the people of Ahch-To for many years, but the planet isn’t just a single set of islands and a vast ocean. There’s so much more to this Jedi-influenced planet for Star Wars to dive into. Locations of great power always hold their own complex history.

Ahch-To could serve as a training location for the next generation of the Jedi Order. Those vast seas shouldn’t be ignored either though as there’s another opportunity there to create a civilization beneath the waves; one haunted by the spiritual monsters roaming the ocean floor.

Batuu

Batuu is a planet that Star Wars has been pushing hard recently thanks to Galaxy’s Edge as well as a number of comic books and novels which have tried to flesh out the location more. The Blackspire Outpost has been the main focus of the Outer Rim planet.

Batuu has a lot more to offer though. Although a VR title might take players through some of the globe, an open-world game might allow the audience to really live the life of a smuggler trying to navigate the criminal underworld bristling within this surprisingly beautiful planet.
