Sons of Anarchy Why Jax & Clay Both Failed As SAMCRO Leader

Throughout Sons of Anarchy, the club had three Presidents, but only two led the entire series: Clay Morrow and Jax Teller, and while they had very different ideas on what was best for the club, they both failed as leaders. Created by Kurt Sutter, Sons of Anarchy debuted on FX in 2008 and came to an end in 2014 after seven successful seasons. The series was praised by critics and viewers from the beginning thanks to its tone, the performances of the main cast (particularly that of Katey Sagal as Gemma Teller-Morrow), and the themes it addressed, most notably racism and corruption, both inside and outside the title club.

Sons of Anarchy tells the story of Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam), VP of the motorcycle club Sons of Anarchy in the fictional town of Charming, in California. The events of the series are kickstarted when Jax finds a manifesto written by his late father, John Teller, one of the founding members of the club. In it, John shared his vision and plans for the club as he didn’t like what it had become, but these ideas didn’t match those of the club’s current President (and Jax’s stepfather), Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman), and so this led Jax to question the club’s path, history, his relationships, family, and himself. Jax eventually took over the place of President of SAMCRO, but was he a better leader than Clay?

Following John Teller’s death, Clay took over the club and led it for over a decade, making sure they maintained a good relationship with rival clubs, looked out for the Charming community, and kept the club afloat in general. During Clay’s presidency, SAMCRO began trafficking weapons and departed from the original purpose of the club, which was a sort of social rebellion for men who wanted to break free from society’s rules, and instead was all about shady businesses and protecting the town to keep a good image. However, Clay was also responsible for many deaths and not just of enemies and civilians, but also members of the club, which would have immediately led to his death had he not been a big liar.

Among John Teller’s wishes for the club was for it to get out of trafficking weapons and “go legit” through other businesses, which is what Jax intended to do when he took over the Sons of Anarchy club. Jax inherited a big mess from Clay, and while his ideas and intentions were good, a chain of unpleasant events was unleashed when he became President. Fans of Sons of Anarchy have pointed out that Jax’s ignorance almost destroyed the club and he based his actions off of lies from others, as mostly seen in the final season when his mother, Gemma, lied to him about Tara’s murderer and blamed it on the Chinese, causing a war between gangs and other events that led to Jax’s death.

John and Jax’s goals were ultimately met under Filip “Chibs” Telford’s (Tommy Flanagan) Presidency as seen in Mayans M.C., and what made them fail were their intentions, their impulses, and all the lies around them and the club. Of course, Kurt Sutter has already been asked the big question of “who was the worst president”, to which he replied that both Clay and Jax were “good men with different leadership skills and different demons”. In the end, fans of Sons of Anarchy will have the final word on who was the better SAMCRO leader: Clay Morrow or Jax Teller.
