SpiderMan 10 Animated Series Villains Closest To The Comics

The 1994 Spider-Man animated series is widely regarded as the best cartoon adaptation of the comic book character ever conceived. It took the comic storylines and adapted them into a semi-serialized show that blended high intensity action and gripping drama to create one truly memorable series.

Many of the villains of Spider-Man took direct inspiration from their comic book counterparts, with certain differences in tow. Today we’re taking a look at the 10 animated series villains that are closest to the comics. Some are identical in appearance and story, while others share only the former.

10 Kraven The Hunter

Kraven’s appearance in the cartoon series is identical only when it comes to appearance and skills. He was portrayed as a sometimes-villain and anti-hero who was driven insane by a chemical compound, only to be cured of his insanity. Later in the show, he assists The Punisher in tracking down the Man-Spider and turning him back into Peter Parker.

In the comics, Kraven is driven largely by maniacal ego, and a quest to prove himself the strongest hunter in the world by defeating Spider-Man. He has allied himself with the Sinister Six, The Army Of Evil and Rampart, among others. Though he has shown moments of honor and integrity, these are few and far between.

9 Shocker

The cartoon Shocker is almost identical to the comic book interpretation of the character, minus one small difference – his gauntlets fired actual electrical bolts, as opposed to compressed air waves like his comic counterpart.

Everything else remains largely same, including the weave costume used to absorb the harmonic waves from his gauntlet blasts in order to protect him. The cartoon would put him in the role of a mercenary for hire, as opposed to his traditional comic book origins as a safe cracker.

8 Mysterio

The cartoon version of Mysterio retains his signature costume and fishbowl helmet, making him one of the most instantly recognizable villains for fans of the comic books. There are some slight differences in character, however.

Comic book Mysterio was a failed actor who utilized his knack for illusions and special effects to become a master criminal, whereas the cartoon version blames Spider-Man for his failures, and attempts to ruin his life.

7 The Vulture

The character of Adrian Toomes wasn’t too far removed from his comic book counterpart except in his business dealings. Both were old men who used the Vulture harness to embark on a criminal career, and both were capable of stealing youth in order to temporarily de-age themselves.

The differences focus mostly on Toomes’ anger and resentment at Norman Osbourne for shooting down several of his key research projects, driving him to a life of crime and the pursuit of vengeance.

6 Venom

The Spider-Man cartoon took a different approach with the Venom origin story than the comics, which would later be adapted for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Here, the symbiote arrives on Earth courtesy of astronaut John Jameson’s return from a mission in space, where he encountered a strange black substance, which of course is revealed to be the alien symbiote.

From there, the story is essentially as per the comics. Disgraced Bugle reporter Eddie Brock blames Spider-Man for getting fired, and he unwittingly merges with the symbiote to form Venom. The show adaptation retains Venom’s signature look, brutality and strengths/weaknesses, which made him a fan favorite.

5 Hobgoblin

While true in spirit to the comic book in terms of physical appearance, the Hobgoblin of the cartoon series was actually an amalgamation of several comic book versions of the character. This might have been done on purpose to throw off comic book fans who already knew the character’s story.

The Hobgoblin of the cartoon is also different in the fact that he shows up long before the Green Goblin makes his appearance later on in Season 3. This is a direct flip of the comic book chronology, where the Hobgoblin was introduced to continue the Goblin mythos first laid down by Norman Osbourne.

4 The Scorpion

The Matt Gargan of the cartoon series is pretty much identical to his comic book counterpart. Both are hired by J. Jonah Jameson to tail Peter Parker and find out how he’s able to get such great pictures of Spider-Man, and both end up getting caught up in an experiment that transforms them into the villainous Scorpion.

As the mutagenic treatment kicks in, so too does Gargan’s inherent mental instability, forcing Jameson to regret his actions. In the end, Spider-Man defeats Gargan, and teaches Jameson a valuable lesson about messing around with mutagenic compounds!

3 The Lizard

Dr. Curt Connors runs a parallel storyline with his comic book counterpart in the animated series. Both are brilliant scientists who discover a way for human to regrow lost limbs by harnessing the power of reptilian DNA.

Both are also transformed into the blood-curling Lizard, a creature of predatory instinct that can barely hold on to their own humanity. While there are slight differences between the stories, both the cartoon and the comic book follow the same identical plot premise, and look the part.

2 Doctor Octopus

When it comes to sticking close to the source material, Doctor Octopus is the defacto standard! His cartoon version of the character sports a suit almost identical to the comic book version of the character, though the two shared a few key origin story differences.

In the comics, Doc Ock was born from an accidental radioactive explosion which grafted his metal tentacles onto his body. The cartoon premise is similar, but adds on an extra layer of story involving grant money pulled for his research, rendering him unable to afford safeguards which eventually lead to the same kind of accident.

1 Green Goblin

The Green Goblin sticks close to his comic book counterpart in terms of appearance, and overall story arc. Though many liberties were taken with the source material, the end result is the same – Spider-Man’s arch-nemesis does his best to ruin Peter Parker’s life in a blind fit of deranged rage.

Though Gobbie wouldn’t pull a Gwen Stacey during his TV show run, he was responsible for Mary Jane Watson disappearing into a dimensional rift, causing Parker to think she’d been killed in a fall – a parallel to the tragic comic book storyline.
