Anakin Skywalker is best known for his descent into the dark side. But he did do some good things despite it all.

The Star Wars Galaxy is vast and expansive, and the timeline is rich with stories to get told and aspects to get explored. However, fans, for the most part, especially in the new canon, have only really gotten a look at a specific period, a period where the Skywalkers are the most important and the most focused on family in the entire Galaxy, with Anakin Skywalker at the forefront of this.
He is an incredible character, layered and complex, with a tragic story, and so engaging throughout his many appearances as Anakin or as Vader. In so many ways, Anakin just keeps getting better and better.
10 Left Slavery
Chronologically, when fans first meet little Anakin Skywalker, he is a slave on Tatooine, under the ownership of the deplorable Toydarian, Watto.
He and his mother are alone, on a nothing planet full of criminals, and he, like so many protagonists, dreams of something bigger, something across the stars, which he gets when Qui-Gon Jinn arrives to free him, with the help of Anakin’s natural skill.
9 Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi
Speaking of Qui-Gon Jinn, his arrival, alongside Obi-Wan Kenobi, improved Anakin’s life more than he could have imagined, at least initially.
Qui-Gon Jinn’s determination to make Anakin a Jedi, his faith in Anakin’s status as the chosen one is what got him free of slavery and into a new life as a Jedi. Obi-Wan vowing to keep Qui-Gon’s wish no matter what and train Anakin following Qui-Gon’s death continued that improvement of Anakin’s life.
8 Rising In The Ranks
When Anakin was officially allowed into the Jedi Order, his natural talent shone through, and his status as an incredible Jedi soon came to fruition.
Anakin quickly rose through from Padawan to Jedi Knight, and on top of that, Anakin was given the rank of General in the Clone War, allowing him to show off his skill as not just a warrior, but a leader.
7 Padmé Amidala
The romance between Anakin and Padmé may be the most crucial relationship in Star Wars, but is also one of the most divisive due to the writing and chemistry in the prequels.
Nevertheless, Padmé was still a considerable improvement in Anakin’s life, while it obviously aided his downfall, he got given more of a purpose, more of a happy life when he was Anakin when he was with Padmé when he was utterly and totally in love. Somehow, someway Anakin would have turned without her, having her and having Luke and Leia made it better.
6 Friendship With R2-D2
R2-D2 is so often underappreciated for how much of a hero, how unbelievably impactful he is in every piece of content in which he appears. He is also underappreciated for how much of a friend he is to Anakin.
Anakin cares unbelievably for Artoo, and treat him better than most people treat their droids. Artoo saved Anakin’s life on multiple occasions, as well as just acting like a great friend for Anakin, and the most trusted droid in the Galaxy at that. Anakin was at times his most likable when his relationship with Artoo unfolded in The Clone Wars.
5 Ahsoka Tano & Captain Rex
Like droids, clones are so easily unappreciated by people in the Galaxy. But, like Artoo, Anakin treats his men excellently, like a true leader and friend, especially his most trusted friend, Captain Rex.
As well as Rex, The Clone Wars sees Anakin given Ahsoka as an apprentice, with a beautiful friendship, a true brother/sister relationship unfolding. While Ahsoka was also an impact on Anakin’s downfall, she was also an incredible friend and improved Anakin’s life by being in it.
4 Relationship With Obi-Wan Kenobi
However, as fantastic as Anakin’s other friendships are, whether they be life-saving or enriching, Obi-Wan will always be his brother, and the friendship fans go to most.
Their relationship improves from Obi-Wan not wanting to train Anakin, to being a strict master, to being a bantering friend, and Anakin following his Master. They are fantastic together in every piece of content and compliment each other brilliantly. Mistakes are made by both, but they love each other, and who knows where either would be without the other.
3 Skill
As mentioned earlier, Anakin had unrivaled raw potential and ability as a young boy and quickly rose through the ranks of the Jedi Order; his skill and power consistently grew all the time.
Throughout his time as a Padawan, as a General, as a Jedi Knight, Anakin became incredibly skilled with a lightsaber, better and better with every ignition, and also garnered so much Force power, and a range of abilities, making him an incredible, rounded warrior. His leadership skills as a General got better as the war went on, and his piloting skills were unmatched at the time.
2 The Clone Wars
The Clone Wars and how much it improved Anakin has gotten alluded to multiple times, but there can be no understating the impact the show had on the character.
Not only did it give him more excellent relationships, but it also drastically improved he and Padmé’s relationship, added so much more to his fall to the Dark Side, and in just every possible way, improved his character.
1 Came Back
The ultimate way in which Anakin improved was by merely remaining in existence, by coming back. While he fell to the Dark Side and became Darth Vader, the light remained, and Anakin returned.
All credit goes to his son Luke Skywalker for never giving up hope on his father for always seeing the light within him. Darth Vader died, and Anakin Skywalker returned as a Force Spirit, fulfilling the redemption of Anakin.
