Spider-Man: 10 Unanswered Questions About Andrew Garfield’s Universe

Andrew Garfield’s take on the Marvel web-slinger left people with a lot of questions regarding The Amazing Spider-Man universe.

After deciding to scrap Spider-Man 4 due to Sam Raimi’s reluctance to put a half-hearted script together, Sony decided to press the reboot button. As a result, The Amazing Spider-Man was the start of a new story with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May, and Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben. After a solid, if unspectacular, box office performance The Amazing Spider-Man 2 then hit screens in the summer of 2014.

Yet with that blockbuster failing to live up to expectations, the franchise was scrapped. However, in recent times, talk of Garfield returning as Peter in the MCU’s Spider-Man 3 has started to pick up momentum. So we’ll now take a look at 10 unanswered questions we have about his universe.

10 What Happened With The Rhino Fight?

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ended on a cliffhanger. Rhino was prepared to cause carnage in New York after being freed from jail, having been sent there by Peter earlier on in the movie. The blockbuster ends with the villain suited up and Spider-Man swinging in to save the day.

However, we never got to see the fight take place – so we’d love to know how it played out. Peter would probably win because, after all, he’s Spidey. But Rhino would have been a formidable opponent to take out and it’s a shame the film ended prematurely without giving fans an answer.

9 What Happened To Harry?

Harry Osborn starts off the second installment as a man on a mission. He knows he needs Spider-Man’s blood in order to treat a debilitating illness that had wiped out his father Norman (more on that later). When he’s declined, he then takes matters into his own hands and ends up transforming into the Green Goblin as a result.

The last we see of Harry is him talking with Gustav Fiers from his cell at Ravencroft, with the pair plotting to put a team together. It would have been interesting to see what happened next, with a Sinister Six movie mooted at the time. And that means we’ve still got unanswered questions as to what happened with Harry and how Peter would have reacted to his old friend following the death of Gwen Stacy, a murder he’s responsible for.

8 Did Mary Jane Enter The Fray?

Shailene Woodley was cast as Mary Jane Watson for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but, ultimately, that blockbuster ended without her appearing. Director Marc Webb deduced that, by having Mary Jane appear, it would have taken away some of the impact from Gwen’s emotional death.

So we’re curious to know whether Mary Jane entered the fray following Gwen’s death. After all, in the comics, that’s what happened. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 would have likely seen her appear but it seems that, unless Garfield’s webhead returns, we’ll never know what happened next.

7 Was Vulture Born?

In the second Amazing Spider-Man blockbuster, many hints are dropped about a Sinister Six movie. Oscorp themselves are very much the antagonists, with the shady organization seen working on several villainous-looking projects. And one seems to hint at Vulture existing within that universe.

When Gustav Fiers strolls around the place, mechanical wings can be seen in the background. There’s obviously a Vulture in the MCU, with Michael Keaton playing Adrian Toomes in Spider-Man: Homecoming. But, in this alternative universe, another could potentially exist.

6 Was Doctor Octopus Born?

Vulture’s wings aren’t the only things viewers see when Fiers walks around Oscorp. There’s also a pair of mechanical arms that hint at the introduction of Doctor Octopus, one of the most famous characters in Spider-Man history.

The last time the character graced the big screen was way back in 2004’s Spider-Man 2, with Alfred Molina playing the role to perfection. The sight of these arms hints that the Sinister Six was very much being lined up but, because the third and final installment of the trilogy never got made, we all missed out. That said, it’s hard to imagine another actor playing the character given how well Molina did 16 years ago.

5 Did Peter Parker’s Dad Survive?

Curiously, there’s a deleted scene on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 DVD and Blu Ray that shows Peter Parker’s father, Richard, returning from the dead. He approaches his son at the graveyard of Gwen Stacy and Peter, once he gets over his initial anger, is willing to have a conversation and a catch-up after all these years.

There were definitely suggestions Richard would return to play a part in Garfield’s story (though we’re not quite sure how he managed to survive a plane crash) so we’d love to get an answer as to whether he really did come back. Many were annoyed at the decision to delve into Peter’s past but we feel it was important for the character.

4 Did Norman Osborn Survive?

We said we’d return to Norman Osborn, so here goes. He seems to pass away during the second movie of the series, succumbing to the same illness that puts Harry’s life in jeopardy. However, when his bed is scanned for signs of life, it’s suggested that Norman may actually have lived on.

In the comics, it’s Norman who becomes the Green Goblin. So is it possible that, in Garfield’s world, there are two versions of the character? If so, that would have been epic to witness on the big screen. And Peter would likely have his work cut out trying to stop the pair from tearing New York apart.

3 Did Electro Live?

The last fans see of Electro, he appears to have been obliterated. Peter and Gwen team up to ensure his defeat, preventing him from killing thousands of people in the process. However, with Jamie Foxx now returning in Spider-Man 3, that’s sparked a wave of theories, rumors and conspiracies.

It’s possible that Foxx will be playing the same version of Electro he did back in 2014 – or it could be a new Max Dillon set in a different universe. Until that movie comes out, though, our questions will remain unanswered. But this, at least, is something we’ll get clarity on further down the line.

2 Did Aunt May Discover The Truth?

Near the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, there are definitely signs that Aunt May is starting to cotton on to the fact her nephew, the innocuous Peter, is actually the same Spider-Man throwing himself around New York to save everybody. There’s almost an unsaid understanding but we don’t know for sure.

It could, therefore, be possible that Aunt May got 100 percent clarity on the matter afterwards. The Aunt May of the MCU knows Peter is the webhead so lightning may have struck twice. It was gearing up to be that way but the cancellation of a third movie means we don’t know for sure what happened.

1 Who Killed Uncle Ben?

In the first Amazing Spider-Man movie, Uncle Ben is killed. He’s shot by a thief and this sparks Peter into a rage, with the hero then going out of his way in order to uncover the killer. This doesn’t happen, though, and he’s left feeling pretty annoyed as a result.

Therefore, we still don’t know who was actually behind Ben’s death. This felt like something Sony was holding back to reveal at a later date but they didn’t ultimately get the chance. It’s just a small loose end but one we believe should have been tied up nonetheless.
