Spike Lee Signs MultiYear Movie Deal With Netflix

Oscar-winning writer-director Spike Lee has signed a multi-year deal with Netflix. Lee directed his feature film debut She’s Gotta Have It in 1986, before achieving critical and commercial acclaim with 1989’s Do The Right Thing. Well-known for exploring themes such as race relations, urban crime, poverty, and political and social hierarchies among Black communities, Lee has developed a reputation as a captivating and controversial filmmaker.

Following the success of the war drama Da 5 Bloods (2020), made in collaboration with Netflix, Lee has signed a multi-year deal with the streaming giant. According to Deadline, the BlacKkKlansman director has entered into a creative partnership after the success of his other Netflix projects, including the series She’s Gotta Have It, Rodney King, and See You Yesterday, which he produced. The 64-year-old seemed excited about the partnership, and you can read his comments below:

“There Is No Better Way For Me And My Company 40 Acres And A Mule Filmworks To Begin The New Year Than Renew Our Partnership With Ted, Scott And Tendo-Da Fearless Leaders Of NETFLIX. Besides My Joints, We Together Will Focus On The New Diverse Storytellers. YOUTH MUST BE SERVED. And Dat’s Da Truth, Ruth. YA-DIG? SHO-NUFF.”

Lee has a back catalog of respected work and is also not afraid of taking on projects that shine a light on our times. Streaming services have grown in popularity recently, especially since the coronavirus pandemic, and Netflix has led the way as a platform offering fresh, interesting, and engaging content. Having recently worked with horror heavyweight Mike Flanagan on Midnight Mass, Netflix seems keen to add another talented filmmaker to its ranks, and Lee is the perfect choice to help the streaming giant produce more groundbreaking content.
