After Disney’s sequel trilogy mined the franchise for nostalgia and poorly emulated its narrative, Star Wars fans appreciate the genius of the original trilogy now more than ever. Rey, Finn, and Poe barely spent any time together, and when they did, they usually contradicted previous scenes and story developments. The trilogy was a total mess.

By comparison, the original trilogy is a masterpiece of serialized storytelling and endearing characterization. Fans will be enjoying the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo for years to come. Here are 10 reasons why these three iconic characters were the perfect trio.

10 They Complemented Each Other’s Character Development

Luke, Leia, and Han didn’t develop independently throughout the original trilogy; they complemented each other’s development. Luke’s unwavering optimism and belief in the Rebellion’s cause makes Han feel guilty about ditching them after receiving his paycheck, inspiring him to return during the Death Star attack to save Luke’s life.

Leia convinces Luke to lay down his lightsaber and offer to settle his conflict with their father Darth Vader peacefully. Han inspires Luke not to play so closely by the rules. All these characters have a profound impact on each other’s lives in a way that Rey, Finn, and Poe simply didn’t in the sequel trilogy.

9 Han And Leia Had One Of Cinema’s All-Time Greatest Romances

When Han and Leia first meet on the Death Star, they immediately start biting each other’s heads off. But throughout the trilogy, their relationship develops. In The Empire Strikes Back, they’re stuck in the Falcon together, pursued by the Empire, allowing their romantic tension to bubble to the surface.

This culminates in the iconic moment in which Leia says, “I love you,” as Han’s about to be frozen in carbonite, and Han replies, “I know.” In Return of the Jedi, Leia teasingly throws these words back in Han’s face as they finally acknowledge their feelings for one another.

8 They Had Ups And Downs

Luke, Leia, and Han didn’t always get along. When Luke and Han first met, they hated each other. Luke saw Han as a cynical flyboy and Han saw Luke as a bright-eyed goody two-shoes. Eventually, they became such good friends that they’d die for each other.

The same goes for when Leia and Han first met. They couldn’t stand each other. But by the end of the trilogy, they were in love.

When they put their heads together, Luke, Leia, and Han can do pretty much anything. The Death Star attack was pulled off spectacularly, with Leia guiding the troops from the Rebel base, Han triumphantly returning to provide Luke with backup, and Luke delivering the final death blow to the Empire’s ultimate superweapon.

When Han was frozen in carbonite and hung on Jabba’s wall, Luke and Leia masterfully executed a plan to spring him out of captivity and bring down the notorious Hutt’s criminal empire in the process.

6 They Shared A Lot Of Scenes Together

One of the many disappointing things about the sequel trilogy is that it took three movies for the filmmakers to put the central trio in any scenes together. And by then, it was too late for their bonds to have any real meaning. In the original trilogy, Luke, Leia, and Han shared a bunch of scenes together.

Viewers saw them just hanging out, which went a long way toward making their friendships feel real. Although Luke took a couple of detours to Dagobah to convene with Yoda and the Force ghost of Ben Kenobi, the trio still spent a ton of time together.

5 Luke And Leia’s Force Bond Had Emotional Weight

Throughout the sequel trilogy, Rey and Kylo Ren engaged in “Force Skype calls” (as fans have dubbed it) every five minutes. They had full-blown conversations across the galaxy. It made the Force seem more like a long-distance provider than a spiritual cosmic energy.

The Force bond shared by Luke and Leia in the original trilogy felt like it had real emotional weight. It was used sparingly, only as a last resort when Luke was at death’s door and in dire need of Leia’s help. This made the plot device so much more effective.

4 They’re All From Completely Different Backgrounds

Luke, Leia, and Han have nothing in common. Luke was raised on a moisture farm with a simple but relatively cushy life; Leia grew up as Alderaan royalty, as well as a key figure in the rising Rebel Alliance; Han was a pirate who had to fend for himself in the criminal underworld.

For all intents and purposes, these three people should not be friends. But circumstances bring them together and they develop a lovable dynamic that helps to liberate the galaxy from the Emperor’s iron fist.

3 The Actors Had Incredible On-Screen Chemistry

The original Star Wars trilogy was cast perfectly. Not only was each actor the ideal choice for their individual roles, but they all shared impeccable on-screen chemistry. No one else could’ve played Luke Skywalker like Mark Hamill, no one else could’ve played Princess Leia like Carrie Fisher, and no one else could’ve played Han Solo like Harrison Ford (as we saw from Alden Ehrenreich’s attempt to do so).

But on top of that, Hamill and Fisher were believable as siblings (apart from when they kissed), Hamill and Ford were believable as horn-locking frenemies, and Ford and Fisher were believable as star-crossed soulmates.

2 They Were All Essential To The Rebels’ Victory

Whereas the Resistance’s victory over the Final Order in The Rise of Skywalker was barely-comprehensible cinematic drivel, the end of Return of the Jedi brought a very clear victory for the Rebel Alliance.

This wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of Luke, Leia, and Han. The credit can’t be awarded to just one of them — or even all three of them, as they had help from others — as they all played a huge role in the Battle of Endor.

1 When They Lost, They Lost Together

The Empire Strikes Back has one of the most famous downer movie endings of all time, as Luke is hopelessly outmatched by Vader, and Han is frozen in carbonite and taken to Jabba’s palace. It’s a crushing defeat for our plucky rebel friends.

But they lost together. In Empire’s final moments, Luke puts an arm around Leia and they stare out into the vacuum of space as Lando and Chewie take the Falcon to an uncertain future. The heroes lost, but they lost together.
