The Best LiveAction Cinderella Renditions Ranked By IMDb

There are more than 500 versions of the story of Cinderella found across the globe. Filmmakers have taken this story and recreated some of the most impressive live-action renditions that keep the tale entertaining. For Disney fans, the 1950 animated version is the most memorable version of the glass slipper story, based on the famous 1697 French novel Cendrillon written by the French author Charles Perrault, but there are dozens of live-action Cinderella movies as well.

A still more surprising fact is that the story can be traced back to a Greek historian who wrote a tale about a Greco-Egyptian Cinderella, Rhodopis, in the first century B.C.E. Many Cinderella works have since then been released with different adaptations of the story. Ranking all versions of Cinderella would nearly be impossible, but the greatest of them all deserve recognition..

Updated on November 30th, 2021 by Amanda Bruce: As Cinderella continues to get more live-action (and musical) adaptations every year, just what makes for a good adaptation is up to the audience. Each version has done its due diligence when it comes to making the adaptations unique. While some set the story in a modern high school, others gender-bend the titular character for a new twist on the story, and some attempt to tell the story from a new point of view. It makes for an eclectic group of Cinderella remakes.

15 A Cinderella Story (2004) – 5.9

The movie A Cinderella Story is a modern high school drama about a young teen who must find her self-confidence and overcome her selfish stepfamily at home. She finds her “prince charming” in the form of a pen pal who she eventually meets at a school dance.

Played by then-teen-star Hilary Duff, this is one of the live-action Cinderella movies that is a teen romance with a few comedic and love cliches. It’s an entertaining rendition of Cinderella that follows the typical love-at-first-sight fairytale plot. Other star cast members include Jennifer Coolidge as the stepmother, Regina King as the fairy godmother, and Chad Michael Murray as the prince.

14 Into the Woods (2014) – 5.9

This movie isn’t technically a Cinderella remake, but a fairytale collaboration with a few fairytale characters melding into one story plot. Cinderella, who is played by Anna Kendrick, is a strong supporting role in this tale about a childless couple who venture out to find ingredients for a spell that will reverse a witches’ curse and help them receive a wish.

They also come across Little Red Riding Hood, Jack, and Rapunzel who all want their own wishes granted. In Into the Woods, Cinderella ends up discovering that what she thought was a dream come true was not all the happiness she thought it would be and eventually leaves her “happily ever after” to find a new one.

13 Cinderfella (1960) – 6.0

The Best LiveAction Cinderella Renditions Ranked By IMDb

In this gender-bent retelling of Cinderella, Jerry Lewis stars as Cinderfella, a young man who lives in the family mansion with his stepmother and stepbrothers, but is forced to live in an unfinished hall after his father dies.

In this version of the story, Fella just wants to be happy with his family, but they’re more interested in finding his father’s hidden fortune. Several more differences exist in the story, like the stepmother throwing the ball for a visiting princess, but they all pull inspiration from the existing fairy tale. Add to that Count Basie and his famous band playing the music for the ball, and this was certainly a fresh and fun take on the story for 1960.

When Hilary Duff starred in A Cinderella Story in 2004, she unknowingly started a franchise of Cinderella remakes. Each installment isn’t connected to the others but provides another modern retelling of the story. Lucy Hale stars in this version, which makes Cinderella an undercover singer/songwriter.

Katie is an aspiring performer attending an arts academy. Her stepsister, who manages to get worse at her attempts at singing the more she practices, wants to win a recording contract, so she and her mother scheme to use Katie’s voice to do it, capturing the attention of the “prince,” who is the son of a record executive. It’s widely considered the best installment of the franchise, and fairy tale fans will definitely enjoy spotting all of the nods to the original story.

The movie The Glass Slipper is an adorable rendition of Cinderella with French-American actress Leslie Caron. The movie is not only an acting script but also a ballet with some amazing and beautifully choreographed ballet performances.

In this storyline, the prince actually plays a large role in building a relationship with this fiery and temperamental Ella after he finds her resting near a lake. Ella is a strange and naïve young woman with almost a childlike personality. She is very expressive and makes the entire movie focus strongly on each character’s personality rather than the typical fairytale.

Inspired by Gregory Maguire’s novel (the same author who penned Wicked) Confessions Of An Ugly Stepsister aired as part of the Wonderful World of Disney’s television movie presentations in the early 2000s. Azura Skye played the titular stepsister, Iris, and the story is largely told from her point of view.

Instead of being Cinderella’s adversary, Iris actually helps her get to the ball. She also apprentices under a painter, and becomes one herself, falling for his other apprentice in the process. This live-action version of Cinderella fleshes out the characters more, giving a new perspective to those characters who were previously one-note villains.

1 Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1965) – 7.7

• Available to stream on Youtube

While the Julie Andrews version of Cinderella was the first version written for television, its popularity prompted it to be adapted for the stage. In turn, the popularity of the stage show led to the story again being adapted for television in 1965, this time starring Lesley Ann Warren.

A few scenes were changed in this version of the story, but for the most part, it remained true to the 1957 version. The difference was that this version was recorded and rebroadcast multiple times over the next decade, making it the definitive live-action version of the story for years. It’s the version most fans were familiar with until Disney remade it again with Brandy and Whitney Houston 30 years later.
