Spike Lee Would Consider Directing A Marvel Movie

Spike Lee revealed that he would consider directing a Marvel movie if the opportunity presented itself. Lee rose to prominence as a director in the late 80s with his groundbreaking films She’s Gotta Have It and Do The Right Thing. His particular screenwriting and directing style has elevated his cultural status as one of the great modern film auteurs, while his focus on the Black American experience brought greater and more authentic representation to the screen. He has been nominated for many awards in his storied career, including five Academy Awards; he finally won his first Oscar in 2019, for Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansmen.

While Lee’s movies have risen to prestige film status, the superhero blockbuster has also flourished in the last few decades. None have been more successful than the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a collection of unified stories that began with Iron Man in 2008 and culminated in the epic Avengers: Endgame in 2019, the latter of which went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time. While superhero films have been dismissed by some as monolithic and controlled more by the studio than the director, the MCU has recently begun attracting more auteur-esque talent, such as Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther).

Spike Lee has now expressed a willingness to join the MCU ranks. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he seemed unbothered by the studio’s reputation and revealed her prefers Marvel to DC.

I have nothing against Marvel. I grew up reading Spider-Man comic books. To me, DC Comics was always corny.

I’m just saying. I was all about Marvel. If the right opportunity comes across, I’m not campaigning for it, but I will give it consideration.

Lee’s welcoming attitude towards Marvel is not necessarily shared by other filmmakers of his status. Most notably, Martin Scorsese, one of the most influential directors of all time (and a good friend of Lee’s), has repeatedly criticized the concept of superhero blockbusters as a whole. Other major directors have followed suit, such as Francis Ford Coppola, Ridley Scott, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu. But despite Lee’s kinship with Scorsese, he has always carved his own unique path in film history, so it makes sense that his opinion would differ.

That only leaves fans to imagine what the Marvel version of a Spike Lee Joint would look like. A Lee-directed MCU film would likely look and feel very different from previous films in the franchise. It’s also hard to imagine that Lee would tolerate the level of studio oversight that another first-time Marvel director might. Perhaps the best way to get him in the MCU would be through an as-yet unadapted superhero that the auteur could build himself from the ground up. Regardless, it’s exciting to imagine the possibilities that Spike Lee could bring to the MCU.
