Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is a found footage horror film about a group of teenagers who investigate a supposedly haunted asylum. Wi plays the character of Ha-Joon (many of the characters share their actor’s name), the boy who decides to gather everyone together and broadcast the entire thing. Seeing as Ha-Joon is in charge of the broadcast, he doesn’t actually enter the asylum until the end of the film.
While Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum doesn’t reinvent the horror genre necessarily, it is still a fun film to watch. It performed very well during its first box office weekend despite being up against Ready Player One. Wi was even nominated for three Best New Actor awards for his portrayal of Ha-Joon.
5 Midnight (2021) – 6.6/10
Midnight is a K-drama thriller film about Kyeong-Mi, a deaf girl who accidentally interrupts a murder. The killer, a psychopathic serial killer, now locks onto Kyeong-Mi as his next victim. Wi Ha-Joon plays the serial killer, Do-Shik. Do-Shik is described as a “Jekyll and Hyde” villain, meaning he abruptly switches between a friendly disposition and a crazed killer.
Wi does an excellent job as the unhinged villain. His switches between personalities are incredibly chilling. Some reviews of the film complain about cringing writing, but this doesn’t seem to affect Wi’s performance. This film is for the Squid Game fans who just can’t get enough of the thrills.
4 Romance Is A Bonus Book (2019) – 8.1/10
Romance is a Bonus Book is a romantic K-drama centered around Cha Eun-Ho and Kang Dan-I. Dan-I and Eun-Ho have known each other since childhood but lost touch when Dan-I married. Now, Dan-I is going through a divorce and comes to work for the same publishing company Eun-Ho is under. The show follows the couple as they grow and fall in love.
Wi Ha-Joon plays Ji Seo-Joon, a freelance book designer Eun-Ho company wants to hire. He presents a bit of a challenge to Eun-Ho as Seo-Joon also has romantic feelings for Dan-I. For fans of classic K-drama romances and tropes, this TV series is the perfect way to see even more of Wi’s acting portfolio.
3 Something In The Rain (2018) – 8.1/10
Something In The Rain follows the story of Yoon Jin-Ah and Seo Joon-Hee as they fall in love and work against many of South Korea’s traditional societal norms. Wi Ha-Joon plays Yoon Seung-Ho, Jin-Ah’s younger brother and Joon-Hee’s best friend. This is a bit of a smaller role for Wi, but it is no less impressive.
One of the main appeals of this K-drama is its pushback on traditional Korean values. Jin-Ah is a woman working in the corporate world, facing many challenges including intimidation and harassment. These topics are often considered taboo in Korean media, so it is refreshing to see them discussed. This show is perfect for those who love classic K-drama tropes but also want a deeper meaning.
2 Shark: The Beginning (2021) – 8.2/10
Shark: The Beginning is a dramatic TV movie. It follows the story of Cha Woo-Sol who is sentenced to three years in a juvenile prison after attacking his high school bully with a pen. While in prison Woo-Sol meets Jung Do-Hyun, played by Wi Ha-Joon, a former MMA fighter who was imprisoned for killing three men that hurt his family.
The film goes on to show Do-Hyun taking Woo-Sol under his wing and teaching him to fight so that he can survive in prison and face his bully when he is finally released. The film has been met with much praise from audiences. For those looking to see Wi Ha-Joon in action yet again, this is the film for that.
1 18 Again (2020) – 8.2/10
18 Again is the South Korean remake of the American movie 17 Again. The film follows Hong Dae-Young as his family begins to fall apart and his wife files for divorce. Dae-Young wishes he could go back in time and re-do his life and the next thing he knows he has been transported to his 18-year-old body.
Wi Ha-Joon plays Ye Ji-Hoon, a famous baseball pitcher. He currently looks after his niece as his own daughter after his brother died in a car accident. Ji-Hoon originally has feelings for De-Young’s wife, but he eventually encourages her to reconcile with her husband. Although it isn’t the best Korean remake of an American classic, it can definitely hold its own. This film is a brilliant remake and perfect for anyone who just wants a heart-warming film.
