Star Wars: 10 Times The Original Trilogy Hinted At The Prequel Era

George Lucas planned the entire Star Wars saga from the beginning. He filled the original trilogy with hints at the prequel-era backstory.

Although he started with the fourth movie, George Lucas planned out the entire Star Wars saga in broad strokes from the beginning. After finishing the original trilogy with the fall of the Empire, Lucas always planned to go back and fill in the backstory of how the Empire came to be.

Throughout the original trilogy, Lucas subtly set up the Old Republic era and the final days of the Jedi Order. Some details changed when Lucas sat down to flesh out his broad-strokes story ideas into a complete three-movie arc, but the original trilogy’s prequel-era hints mostly still hold up.

10 “Obi-Wan… Now, That’s A Name I’ve Not Heard In A Long Time.”

When Luke watches Leia’s message on R2-D2’s memory drive, he theorizes that the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” she seeks could be his friend Ben Kenobi, a hermit who lives out in the desert.

After Kenobi saves Luke and the droids from Tusken Raiders and they ask about Obi-Wan, he says, “Obi-Wan… now, that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time.” This line hinted that the wise Jedi Master had to go into hiding and come up with a new identity.

9 Luke’s Ex-Jedi Father

The prequels tell the tragic saga of Anakin Skywalker, a wayward Jedi apprentice who’s corrupted by Palpatine and turned to the dark side. Luke Skywalker’s father was teased as an ex-Jedi warrior before The Empire Strikes Back revealed that Darth Vader was his father.

The original Star Wars movie introduced Vader as a faceless symbol of evil, but Empire humanized him by showing the man under the mask and eventually revealing that he has kids, setting him up as the protagonist of the next Star Wars trilogy.

8 “Yoda, The Jedi Master Who Instructed Me”

When Luke is stranded in a snowstorm on Hoth, he’s visited by the Force ghost of Obi-Wan, who sends him to go to the Dagobah system to “learn from Yoda, the Jedi Master who instructed me.” Eventually, in the prequels, Yoda was characterized as the head honcho of the Jedi Order as opposed to Obi-Wan’s direct master. Instead, Obi-Wan was taught by Qui-Gon Jinn.

But this Empire Strikes Back line is still true from a certain point of view, because Yoda acted as a wise mentor to Obi-Wan and was shown to teach all the youngling classes. Plus, they were the only two surviving Jedi after the Purge (or so it seemed).

7 The Clone Wars

A huge part of the prequel era is the Clone Wars. Palpatine fabricated the Separatists and drove them against the Republic to spark a galaxy-wide war that would destabilize the government, grant him emergency powers, and allow him to reorganize the Republic into the Empire.

In Leia’s message to Obi-Wan, she says, “Years ago, you served my father in the Clone Wars.” Leia’s biological father, Anakin, actually served alongside Obi-Wan in the Clone Wars, but this message refers to the adoptive father who raised her, Senator Bail Organa.

6 Mon Mothma

Mon Mothma was introduced as the leader of the Rebellion in Return of the Jedi. When the Rebels sit down for the standard mission briefing ahead of yet another Death Star destruction, Mon Mothma provides all the information that “many Bothans died” to gather.

This character reappeared in Revenge of the Sith, played by Genevieve O’Reilly, during the sequence in which the Rebellion is formed to fight back against the Empire’s tyranny.

5 “When I Left You, I Was But The Learner…”

When Darth Vader confronts Ben Kenobi on the Death Star for their ultimately deadly lightsaber duel, he tells the legendary Jedi, “I’ve been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner. Now, I am the master!”

This seemingly throwaway line laid the groundwork for one of the most intense, visually stunning, and emotionally devastating set-pieces in Revenge of the Sith: Obi-Wan leaving his fallen apprentice for dead in a molten riverbank on Mustafar.

4 The Best Star Pilot In The Galaxy

After Luke finds out that Obi-Wan knew his father, he pries him for information. Obi-Wan explains, “He was the best star pilot in the galaxy… a cunning warrior… and he was a good friend.”

This is basically a character bio of Anakin in the prequels. In the climactic set-piece of The Phantom Menace, he singlehandedly blows up the Trade Federation’s mothership at the age of nine.

3 Yoda’s Warnings

Throughout the original trilogy, Yoda is constantly worried that Luke will turn to the dark side. He encourages him to face his worst fears in a creepy cave and warns him that he’s not ready to face Vader when he flies off to fight him on Cloud City.

Later, the prequels explained why Yoda was so concerned about the dark turn that Luke’s Jedi training could take. After sensing darkness in Luke’s father’s soul, Yoda allowed him to be trained as a Jedi anyway, and he ended up joining the Sith and taking over the galaxy. Yoda doesn’t want the same thing to happen to Luke.

2 The Imperial Senate

When Grand Moff Tarkin is introduced on the Death Star, he tells the other Imperial bureaucrats, “The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I’ve just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently.”

This scene shows the last shred of democracy from the Old Republic being stripped away. In the Old Republic, the Senate was a place for political discussion and diplomatic voting. After the Empire took over, the Senate was reformed into an advisory body to Emperor Palpatine.

1 “The Son Of Skywalker Must Not Become A Jedi.”

After the Emperor was teased as the big bad controlling Darth Vader’s actions in the original Star Wars movie, he was introduced via hologram call in The Empire Strikes Back.

Palpatine explains, “We have a new enemy. The young Rebel who destroyed the Death Star… I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker. The Force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi.” This hints at Palpatine’s master plan from the prequels. Anakin’s son having a similar midi-chlorian count and a stronger drive to do the right thing puts a major spanner in that plan.
