Star Wars 9 Things You Never Knew About Boushh The Bounty Hunter

Star Wars is full of obscure characters that have shown up once or twice, only to disappear back into the dustbin of galactic history. The iconic and intimidating bounty hunter Boba Fett got his start in much the same way but was quickly elevated to fan-favorite status. Another bounty hunter, Boushh, wasn’t quite so lucky, but he’s still a memorable character, regardless.

Most fans know Boushh as the character Leia impersonates in order to rescue Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, but there’s more to that character than just a suit of armor and a voice scrambler. Boushh was a real person, and although his backstory and details are quite light, there’s enough there to cobble together some interesting facts.

The Ubese Race

Very little is known of Boushh’s race, the Ubese, or the planet of Uba IV that he hailed from. Though it was a mid-rim planet, Uba IV and its inhabitant race were notoriously isolationist, to the point of rejecting almost all contact with the outside world. Only minor trade was considered acceptable, and nothing else.

It is possible that Boushh was exiled from Uba IV by his people, as per their custom. When that happens, these Ubese are removed from the public record and banished into the depths of space. This might be why Boushh decided to join the ranks of Star Wars’ most intimidating bounty hunters since there would be no other way to return home.

His Death

Though many Star Wars fans assumed that Boushh was killed before Leia eventually got a hold of his armor, that’s not the case. In fact, Boushh managed to live on after losing all his gear to Leia in a fight, at which point he decided to tempt his fate with the Black Sun criminal syndicate.

This would later lead to his death, which was par for the course for most who decided to cross the Black Sun. Given Boushh’s inherently isolationist upbringing and his low-key status as a clever bounty hunter, news of his death took time to circulate, giving Leia plenty of time to capitalize on his identity.

The Maz Kanata Connection

Maz Kanata was first introduced in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens as an old ally of Han Solo, and someone attuned to the Force. Her connection with Boushh was fleshed out in the animated series Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, which tells the story of how Leia acquired the bounty hunter’s armor.

During a trip to Ord Mantell, Leia encountered the mysterious Star Wars character Maz Kanata for the first time in search of help in rescuing Han. As fate would have it, Boushh took the opportunity to strike, putting Leia, Maz, R2-D2, and Chewbacca under fire. They finally managed to subdue and knock Boushh out, and Maz suggested that Leia take the armor and use it to infiltrate Jabba’s palace.

Leia’s First Use Of The Armor

Before launching her daring raid on Jabba’s palace to rescue Han, Leia used Boushh’s armor to rescue Lando Calrissian from the clutches of a bounty hunter group led by the legendary Trandoshian Star Wars bounty hunter, Bossk. In the process, Chewbacca was captured, and both she and Calrissian had to deliver their best acting performances to fool Bossk.

The entire mission almost went sour, but it ended with Bossk relenting, and Leia getting to take Chewie away in cuffs, to create some cover. In many ways, it was a test run for the kind of character performance she’d need to fool Jabba, but sadly, the Hutt had other plans.

Boba Fett Warned Jabba About An Imposter

According to the novel Return of the Jedi: Beware the Power of the Dark Side!, Boba Fett was onto Leia when she arrived in character as Boushh. Star Wars fans remember a scene in Return of the Jedi when they exchanged glances, and Fett seems to nod to his fellow bounty hunter with a gesture of respect.

In truth, Fett knew that it wasn’t the real Boushh under the helmet, leading the Hutt to speculate as to who it might be. He was pleasantly surprised to find Princess Leia underneath the costume after she thawed Han Solo from his carbonite prison.

The E.T. Connection

This little-known tidbit is still a mystery to most Star Wars fans, but it does create a link between the worlds that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg created. The voice of Boushh in Return of the Jedi was provided by actress Pat Welsh, who has only three acting credits to her name on IMDb.

One of those roles was the voice of the titular alien in E.T. – The Extra-Terrestrial, which is still considered by some to be Steven Spielberg’s best alien film. Welsh was a relative unknown, with all three of her acting credits (including 1940’s Waterloo Bridge) being uncredited. She passed away in 1995 at the age of 79. While the character’s memorable primarily for his distinct look, Welsh’s voice work was crucial in establishing the character’s unique identity. Her throaty vocal inflections were otherworldly and suggested a vaguely sinister background to the character.

Boushh’s Helmet

Boushh’s helmet carries a voice scrambler built into the design, which can disguise the wearer’s speech. This is another reference to the Ubese culture of isolationism, perhaps as a means to disguise what little contact they had with the outside world. For a bounty hunter, this kind of thing would prove invaluable.

In addition, the helmet also utilized a night vision viewer and a laser used for targeting, which would be useful in tense shootouts, even against multiple opponents. Beyond that, there don’t appear to be any special surprises hidden in the design and makeup of the helmet.

Weapons Of Choice

Boushh was highly proficient in several different weapons, including blaster rifles, but he was no slouch up close, either. Despite his diminutive size, Boushh was considered a fearsome bounty hunter that few people would have wanted to cross. He demonstrated his fighting skills on Ord Mantell when battling Princess Leia.

There, he attempted to knock her down with a metal lance tipped with a shock blade, but Maz Kanata managed to turn the weapon against him, knocking him unconscious. The jolt was enough to put him out for the long term, while Leia took his helmet, armor, and gear.

The Unlockable Battlefront II Outfit

Star Wars: Battlefront II has many unlockable outfits and appearances for the main character classes, as well as the heroes and villains of the franchise. For Princess Leia, players can unlock the same Boushh outfit she wore on Tatooine, complete with the same garbled speech synthesis.

To unlock the outfit, players will need to rack up 80,000 credits or 2,000 crystals, at which point they get access to this Legendary outfit. For many players, it’s one of Leia’s coolest looks, and getting to play as the small bounty hunter in a large-scale battle is what Star Wars dreams are made of.
