Count Dooku was one of the Star Wars saga’s most dangerous and influential antagonists, but who did he train as a Jedi and later as a Sith?

The Sith Lord Darth Tyranus, formerly the Jedi Master Count Dooku, was a powerful and influential antagonist in the Star Wars prequels who trained several apprentices as a Jedi and later Sith. Dooku’s skills in combat and mastery of the Force (and later its dark side upon becoming a Sith) were as lethal as his extensive political meddling, making him a dangerous enemy and a ruthless yet effective teacher. As a result, any Jedi or Sith who trained under Dooku became a deadly and cunning fighter.
Dooku was a master of Makashi, Form II of lightsaber combat, which specialized in one-on-one fights between lightsaber users. Dooku was also adept at advanced Force techniques, including Force lightning during his Sith Lordship. In addition to possessing incredible resources as the Count of Serenno, Dooku was a successful political leader, dividing the Galactic Republic in half during the Separatist Crisis by convincing countless systems to his Separatist cause. Having been trained himself by the legendary Yoda (and Thame Cerulian in the Legends timeline) as a Jedi and Darth Sidious as a Sith, Dooku learned from the most powerful Force users at the time, helping him become the formidable villain seen in the films.
Despite his intellect, combat skills, and knowledge of the Force, Dooku was, ultimately, a pawn of Palpatine. Dooku was used as the public face of the Separatist movement, a placeholder and human sacrifice for Darth Vader and his ascension to Sith Lordship, and a useful tool to scapegoat the Jedi Order for the benefit of the Galactic Empire. However, despite Palpatine ensuring the futility of his life and endeavors, Dooku left behind a legacy of pupils during his time as a Jedi and Sith. Here are the apprentices of Count Dooku in canon and Legends.
Qui-Gon Jinn (Both)
The protagonist of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and the eventual master of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn was a padawan of Dooku, and was held in high regard by the Jedi Master. Dooku’s political ideas had a strong influence on Jinn, who would go on to be considered a maverick among Jedi. Thanks to Dooku, Qui-Gon had no qualms with criticizing or disobeying his higher-ups in the Jedi Order or the Republic, if he felt that they were wrong. Dooku spoke highly of the late Qui-Gon in both timelines, but Jinn’s death affected Dooku more profoundly in Legends. The death of his prized pupil due to the Jedi’s political meddling was partially responsible for Dooku leaving the Jedi Order and joining the Sith, ironically replacing the Sith Lord who killed Qui-Gon.
Asajj Ventress (Both)
The Separatist dark side assassin Asajj Ventress was trained by Dooku shortly after the outbreak of the Clone Wars. In Legends, Asajj was a Rattataki who remained a Separatist leader until the end of the war, when Dooku left her for dead on Boz Pity. In canon, Ventress was reimagined as a Dathomirian Nightsister, who was betrayed by Dooku earlier in the war. The canon version of Ventress sought revenge on Dooku but failed to kill her former master each time, even with numerous advantages. In both timelines, Dooku ensured that Asajj was a lethal fighter and worthy of her unofficial position within the Sith Order.
General Grievous (Both)
A Kaleesh cyborg and the leader of the Separatist military, General Grievous was trained by Dooku in lightsaber combat, despite his lack of Force-sensitivity. In canon, Grievous’ training under Dooku is only mildly touched on, and the General struggles against formidable Jedi and Clones. In Legends, however, Grievous is a terrifyingly efficient Jedi killer, whose training is shown in detail in the Legends-era Star Wars: Clone Wars. Dooku tutored Grievous in both lightsaber combat and psychological warfare. Thanks to Dooku, Grievous intimidated his prey, making them susceptible to his lethal strikes. Grievous failed to heed Dooku’s advice when facing off against Mace Windu on Coruscant, however, a mistake that resulted in a severe injury that Grievous never recovered from.
Quinlan Vos (Both)
In both canon and Legends, the Jedi Master Quinlan Vos became a double agent for the Jedi within the Sith and the Separatists, but Vos himself is quite different in the two continuities, the circumstances of his eventual return to the Republic differed as well. In canon, Dooku physically and psychologically tortured Vos until he fell to the dark side in despair. Vos eventually renounced the dark side, thanks to his love for Asajj Ventress, Dooku’s former pupil. In Legends, Dooku tempted and manipulated Vos into falling, rather than torturing him. Vos managed to return to the Jedi and reject the dark side during a mission with his childhood friend, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Rael Averross (Canon)
Rael Averross was Dooku’s first Jedi apprentice in the canon timeline. Similar to Qui-Gon, Averross tended to bend the rules at best and disobey the Jedi Code at worst. These traits were likely emboldened, if not encouraged, by Dooku, but this wasn’t the only influence he left on Averross. Rael was also a famously skilled duelist, taking after his master. While his fighting form isn’t specified, Averross may have also been a practitioner of Makashi, like Dooku.
Savage Opress (Canon)
Hailing from Dathomir, Savage Opress was the brother of Dooku’s Sith predecessor, Darth Maul. Gifted to Dooku as a replacement for Ventress by Nightsister Mother Talzin, Opress underwent grueling Sith training under Dooku that was far more intense than his life as a Nightbrother. The result was a more talented, albeit brutish, lightsaber wielder with a powerful command of the dark side. His apprenticeship and training under Dooku were short-lived, however, as he was planted in the Sith Order as an assassin on behalf of Ventress, though he failed to kill the Count and fled the Sith to find his brother.
Komari Vosa (Legends)
In Legends, Komari Vosa was Dooku’s only other known apprentice, after Qui-Gon. Vosa accompanied Dooku to Galidraan and fought in the subsequent battle against Jango Fett’s Mandalorian warriors that left few survivors on both sides. Vosa later went on a disastrous mission to thwart the cult-like Bando Gora crime organization, only to fall to the dark side and become their new leader. Vosa’s lightsabers closely resembled Dooku’s and her fighting skills were extremely refined, making her a deadly opponent during a rematch with Jango. Jango nevertheless prevailed, and Dooku executed his former apprentice, taking her lightsabers and gifting them to Asajj Ventress years later.
Sev’rance Tann (Legends)
General Sev’rance Tann was Asajj Ventress’ Sith predecessor and the leader of the CIS military before Grievous. As a Force-sensitive who’d fallen to the dark side, Tann voluntarily joined Dooku to learn to harness the dark side’s powers rather than belief in the CIS ideology. Thanks to Dooku, Tann was a deadly fighter with a lightsaber, killing numerous Jedi and Clone Troopers during the first month of the Clone Wars. Tann also learned the advanced power of Force lightning, which she used to great effect on the battlefield. By the second month of the war, Tann was killed by Jedi Master Echuu Shen-Jon, who tapped into the dark side in the process, making her death a victory for Dooku.
Sora Bulq (Legends)
The Weequay Jedi Master Sora Bulq lost faith in the Jedi and the Republic during the Battle of Geonosis, which saw the death of countless Jedi. Early in the Clone Wars, Bulq was captured by Dooku, who played on Bulq’s traumatic experience and his use of the unstable Vaapad lightsaber fighting style to turn him to the dark side. As an agent of Dooku’s Bulq worked to sow division and doubt among the Jedi Order, recruiting many to the CIS and Dooku, forming the Dark Acolytes. Though Bulq met his end at the Battle of Saleucami towards the end of the Clone Wars (at the hands of Quinlan Vos, no less), his training under Dooku turned many Jedi into minions of the Sith, further demonstrating how dangerous Count Dooku was in the Star Wars franchise.
