The Clone Wars Almost Told Boba Fett’s Epic Origin Story Why Is Star Wars Saving It

Star Wars: The Clone Wars almost took on Boba Fett’s origins, yet to this day have never done so in a meaningful way. The animated series covered a lot over the course of its 6, soon to be 7 season run. Most notably, it fleshed out a lot of the background elements of the mainstream Star Wars films. Old favorites were given deeper backstories and planets were fully explored, adding context to the wider universe. One aspect that has yet to be expanded upon was Boba Fett, who got far less development than those around him. There were plans to do this, yet it never completely came to fruition.

Boba was of course given a proper origin in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, however it was little more than fan service. He appeared as a child, and then reemerged as a teen and later a young adult in The Clone Wars. Even still, he never truly became the fearsome bounty hunter fans knew him as before the series was initially cancelled. Years later unfinished scenes detailing his time as Cad Bane’s protegee and later adversary, as well as more team-ups with the likes of Bossk and other bounty hunters, came to light. Originally created for a future season of the show, this arc was never formally completed and therefore is not canon although it’s still treated as canon behind the scenes, but we still have yet to see it.

The big question is, why has Disney not elected to put such a story onto screens at any capacity? It is no secret that Boba Fett’s popularity is through the roof relative to most Star Wars characters, so more content from his early bounty hunting days would prove successful. It almost seems as though they’re saving the story for just the right project, given most unfinished Clone Wars arcs have made their way into the canon via novels or comics, for example in the case of Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir or Dark Disciple. Boba’s arc as previously planned for the show could easily work in these formats, it’s just a matter of whether or not Disney chooses to pick it up.

Given how much has been done on it already, the most likely route for Disney would be for this Clone Wars arc to be completed, possibly repackaged into a spin-off miniseries. If nothing else, at least this would get the episodes released without impeding upon the upcoming season 7. It could even be edited together into a short movie on Disney+. However, the story itself could also work very well in the format of a live-action series, even if this is the least plausible. In fact, the rumored Boba Fett film by James Mangold could have included some of the story in question, but this is purely speculation as little was known about that show.

Even though The Mandalorian has filled the quote for helmeted bounty hunters in live-action for the time being, it is highly unlikely Lucasfilm has completely forgotten about the original. Hopefully, at some point down the line, Boba Fett will be given some time to shine, be it in animation, live-action, or otherwise. It would be nice to see The Clone Wars story finally completed, especially with the show wrapping up in February, but who really knows what, if anything, will come from those unfinished episodes. There is still plenty of story to be told from the galaxy’s most dangerous bounty hunter, so surely fans have not seen the last of Boba Fett just yet.
