Stardew Valley Is JojaMart Really Evil

Players overcome many obstacles when they take on caring for a farm in Stardew Valley. However, the biggest challenge players will face is the battle against the game’s antagonist, JojaMart. The corporation is similar to the Walmart or Costco of the Stardew Valley world, and the player’s conflict with JojaMart begins long before they start filling out Community Center bundles for the Junimos. As it turns out, players will quickly realize, life is not better with Joja.

Stardew Valley players first encounter JojaMart in a cinematic at the start of the game. The character they play receives a letter from their now deceased Grandfather, stating that they have inherited his country farm in Stardew Valley. The player is currently employed through JojaMart, working in a corporate headquarters for Joja in a room full of dingy cubicles. On the wall above the player, indicator lights let them know when they are working and when they are allowed to rest, all while being observed by men in black suits through glass on either side of the room.

When the player decides to leave Joja and move to the country town of Stardew Valley, they are again faced with the presence of the corporation, which has set up a location next to the local country store. Players may not think too deeply about it at first, but on second glance it may seem odd that a large cooperation has a store in a town as small as Stardew Valley, which consists of less than thirty people. This is a subtle way of showing the power that JojaMart has in the world of Stardew Valley. The JojaMart in town is driving the local businesses into bankruptcy, and has left many people living in the town, like Shane and Sam, working a heartless job while drowning in depression.

Stardew Valley Comments On The Effects Of Big Corporations

However, players get a real idea of how evil JojaMart is when they begin their efforts to restore the community center. During the cutscene that shows the player discovering the rundown building, the Joja manager Morris arrives and tries to tempt the player with a Joja Membership. Morris wants to level the Community Center and replace it with a JojaMart Warehouse, and will be able to do it if the whole town converts to Joja. The Community Center represents the heart of Stardew Valley, and as the player repairs each room they are lovingly restoring the things that once held the community together. If the player chooses the JojaMart membership, the Community Center is destroyed, and the town is permanently altered by the lack of community.

While JojaMart has managed to suck some of the life out of the small town of Stardew Valley before the player arrives, with a good deal of strategy and elbow grease, it doesn’t take long before the Community Center is brought back to its former glory. By defeating JojaMart’s attempts to take over the town, the player is able to rid Stardew Valley of the corporation’s evil, selfish intentions. The distressing effects of JojaMart in Stardew Valley give a heavier feel to the farming simulation compared to other games in the farming genre, and this battle against the corporate machine could be one of the reasons the game continues to appeal to so many players, despite having been available for several years.
