A new mod for beloved indie farming sim Stardew Valley lets players save anywhere, anytime, as opposed to the base game, which only allows players to save at the end of the day. Many fans consider this to be an outdated feature, and an antiquated limitation on one of the best modern farming games on the market.

While video games have featured save states since the days of Zork, it wasn’t until the original The Legend of Zelda that on-console saves were possible. This allowed players to save their game at any point in the journey. Stardew Valley, however, offers no such feature. The only way to save is to reach the end of an in-game day either by retiring to bed early or passing out at 2:00 AM. The recent 1.5 update did nothing to address this issue, despite how many other features it added. While it’s true that some games still rely on save points–RPGs are a common example–it’s rare for a farming sim to adhere to such restrictions.

If players are willing to mod their game, however, these archaic save requirements are undone. Created by Omegasis, Aredjay, and CMiSSioN, the “Save Anywhere” mod gives players the opportunity to save whenever and wherever they’d like. Simply hitting “K” brings up the save menu, and players can continue their virtual farming life. Those interested must have SMAPI (Stardew Modding API) installed in order for the mod to run. The mod was only recently uploaded to Nexus Mods, and as such, is still fairly glitchy. For example, one known bug is that saving inside the house results in the player’s spouse vanishing until the next day. MusicWolfGX, who originally reported the bug, did clarify that they had other mods installed that could conflict with the Save Anywhere function. It’s not the only mod to break with the new save system. The popular “Adopt N Skin” mod also fails to function as intended.

This is also far from the first “Save Anywhere” mod to be released for Stardew Valley, but it is the first to be truly compatible with version 1.5. One of the authors of the mod, Omegasis, previously uploaded a “Save Anywhere” mod for version 1.4. This previous experience will likely help the developers keep the new version in tip-top shape.

Stardew Valley without manual saves is still more than functional and is possibly a better experience for long-time farmers. The Save Anywhere mod is recommended for those just starting their new lives in Pelican Town. For those with years passed in-game and elaborate setups or other mods, it may be worth sticking with the built-in save system to avoid accidentally breaking any systems. Any impatient Stardew Valley fans who can’t wait for a day to end, though, now have a chance to save to their hearts’ content.
