Stephen King Books That Would Make Great Video Games

Over the course of five decades, Stephen King has entertained readers and audiences with his various books and short stories. Despite movies, TV shows, and comics all portraying his written works, there haven’t been a whole lot of video games from the master of horror. That’s sad news for King fans and gamers in general, since a lot of Stephen King’s book would make great video games.

Although it’s gotten a nice graphic novel adaptation, The Dark Tower books are begging for a video game adaptation. Stephen King’s magnum opus spans seven mainline books, a spin-off novel, and many comics. The books read like Lord of the Rings meets The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Despite a movie adaptation that was poorly received, the Dark Tower books are the perfect combination for a video game that’d feel like a mix of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Final Fantasy.

Another of Stephen King’s novels that would make a good fantasy game would be Eyes of the Dragon. It’s honestly amazing the book wasn’t a point-and-click adventure game on PC like King’s Quest already. Of all of King’s works, Eyes of the Dragons would make the beast point-and-click fantasy adventure. Still, the author is best known for his horror titles, and there are plenty of scary books waiting to be adapted into video games.

Stephen King Novels That Would Make Great Horror Games

A video game adaptation for It would make a lot of sense. It is easily one of Stephen King’s most popular novels, and with two successful movies recently released, it’s odd no developers tried to cash-in on It. Pennywise the Clown has been terrorizing readers and an entire generation who grew up with the mini-series starring Tim Curry. It has the potential to be one of the most horrifying video games of all time, if only someone would make it.

The Stand, Stephen King’s sprawling novel about good vs. evil after a global superflu wipes out most of the population, is another book that would make a great video game. Although it may feel a bit too similar to the worlds of games like The Last of Us on the surface, The Stand isn’t a zombie-type novel, so enemies would be much more human. Instead, gameplay would most likely be a stealthy shooter mixed with survival mechanics.

Although the book and movie adaptation received mixed reviews, Stephen King’s Dreamcatcher is just begging to be made into a video game. It’s got aliens, a snowy backwoods setting, military intrigue, and man-eating space weasels that eject out of people’s backsides. Dreamcatcher would make a great survival horror and FPS game. It could be the horror video game 2002’s The Thing always wanted to be.

Stephen King’s novels have proved to be popular time and time again. There’s a reason countless movies and TV shows based on his work have been adapted over the years. It’s a shame a good Stephen King video game hasn’t happened yet. Although, maybe one day at least one of these books will get the video game treatment.
