Succession Made Kieran Culkin Realize He Truly Wanted To Be An Actor

Succession star Kieran Culkin explains how the show helped him realize that he wanted to be an actor. Premiering on HBO in June 2018, Succession is a satirical dramedy created by Jesse Armstrong. It centers around the exceptionally dysfunctional and massively wealthy Roy family, owners of the global media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar RoyCo. In its first two seasons, the series has focused on the children of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) as they fight and scheme with the goal of eventually taking control of their father’s company.

After a long wait, Succession season 3 will premiere on Sunday, October 17 and it’s poised to delve deeper into the family turmoil that has earned the show critical acclaim and an assortment of awards. The dramedy has been nominated at the BAFTAs, the Emmys, and the Golden Globes. In the case of Culkin, who portrays Logan’s youngest son, Roman, he has been nominated at the latter two ceremonies for his portrayal.

As part of a cover story for THR, Culkin spoke candidly about how he hasn’t always embraced fame. In spite of a long career in front of the camera and on stage, the actor confessed that it was not until the end of Succession season 1 that he truly realized he wanted to be an actor. In his quote, which is included below, Culkin reflects on how strange that is.

“I’m trying to remember the exact moment it hit me. I think it was at the end of the first season. I remember coming home and thinking, ‘This is what I want to do with my life. I think I want to be an actor.’ I was, like, 36. I’d already been doing it for 30 years.”

While it’s true that Roman Roy is arguably Culkin’s most recognizable role, he’s received acclaimed for his performances in the past. For his turn as the title character in 2002’s Igby Goes Down, the actor earned acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination at the age of 19. Culkin received offers for more projects in its aftermath. But, he says, he wouldn’t have been ready to handle the level of attention that came with a bigger Hollywood profile. Rather than latch onto any potential blockbusters or notable television series, Culkin favored work in the off-Broadway play After Ashley alongside Anna Paquin. At times, he would also accept minor movie parts such as when he appeared in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World as Wallace.

Succession has opened up Culkin to the joys of acting, as he recently took on a prominent supporting role in Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move. And, in a sense, it’s not surprising. Roman begins the series as a particularly odious figure. In the premiere episode, the character taunts a child from a poor family with the promise of a big cash reward and the stunt even seems to disturb Logan. It’s not that Roman has necessarily become a better person since then, but with more episodes, and more time to spend with Culkin’s performance, the youngest Roy son has shown a more complex and sympathetic side. That sort of layered storytelling, aided by stellar writing and direction, has to be rewarding for a performer.
